mobile internet using laptop

Postby charliemike11 » March 14, 2011, 12:32 am

Hi folks can anyone tell me my best options for using my laptop in Thailand for a month??
At home I have a mobile dongle which I use but i'm told it's expensive to use abroad SO can i get an internet dongle in thailand to use for a month and how much would it cost?

I'm staying in a very rural village and would consider paying for a phone line and having internet connected but god knows how much that would cost (phone lines modem etc)?

Any ideas would be welcomed

cheers :D

you can easily buy a thai mobile sim card DTAK or 12CALL and have it just for the internet at around 215bt for a month with DTAK that gives you 100 hours of use .

12-Call offers several GPRS packages. Dial *138 to listen to them all. THB 200/month gets you 50 hrs. Unlimited is THB 1,000 /month. You can tether to your phone if your phone incapable of tethering. You can get broadband speeds if you buy a CDMA modem which give you a personal wifi hotspot. Google it.

Hi,
Five years ago I used a Sierra Air card 750. Bought this in LOS for 8,000B Just under 120GBP then. I believe they are cheaper to buy now. Can use in many countries, in the world, and cheaper with their sims card in it. Their web site is www.sierrawireless.com. Worked very good all over Thailand. The price I paid included a sims card with 200B credit on it. Used to top it up by putting sim card. I used 12 Call for this,in a mobil phone and putting credit into it, and then putting card and unit into a slot in laptop.
This card works on windows XP, 2000, Me and 98SE, NT4.0, and 95.
Used this for about a year. When I settled down, I have not used it. So cannot tell you the costs of using it now. There main office is in Bangkok. The speed is slower than using phone line but I found it O.K. Did what I wanted it to do.
As for Broadband speed, I've been to many countries where it is a lot slower than here. If your computer does not have the capibilities of running fast, can be a number of things causing this, you will not get it to run fast. Even if you install a internet turbo on it. Try cleaning out your rubbish and switch off all programs you do not use often. Still poster did not want to know this.

I bought an Aircard (usb dongle with SIM slot) las t november for 1100 baht; a lot cheaper now than Douglas paid. Use it in my netbook; airtime bought by putting the sim into a phone, same as Douglas. However, speed is very poor so only good for email and browsing forums, or news websites as long as you ignore videos; also forget about uploading photos unless very lucky. Connection speed can vary a lot by location, so if slow try somewhere else (indoors sometimes worse). Can get them at any computer shop and most phone shops.

Hi,
The air card i bought, GPRS, fitted into a slot on the left side, of my laptop. Not USB skt.. Aerial detachable, about 3 inchs long, card width 2.5 inchs, length 3.5 inchs. Did not know slot was there untill i was shown it. Card does not potrude. Speed was not as good as phone line, to be expected. instead of one min with phone line connection, it took 2 mins, for photos and all, except videos, O.K. for me. Did not try downloading videos. Always get big downloads at night, at home, when i was sleeping. My L/T has a Athlon 64, 3600 chip from 2004. So not to fast. You can get a promg. that will compress your photos, files and videos if you want. and will speed up your downloads when using GRPS. on a laptop. Can get a free 30 days trial. Have not got address to hand, will have to look for it.
According to the book I got when i got the aircard. If you have win. lower than XP you will need a firewall, can be got free at http://www.zonelabs.com. Also a virus scanner, also free from www. grisoft.com/us/us dwnl free.php.
Your P.C. is not locked to a single network and can be used world wide. So if travelling seek out the cheapest network and buy a SIM's card for that and insert it. The cheapest rates i got in LOS in 2005 was 0.06B a min.
Did not see any difference in connection speeds, indoors or outdoors. Used this in LOS.from south to north and in bordering countries. Everywhere in LOS was very good.
As i say, maybe not the cheapest, but i think the best. Rick proves my point with the problems with his 1100B one. You get better reception outside. Lot of rain this morning. With a decent aerial, and the one i have got, reception is the same indoors, or out. Even in areas like BKK. in the middle of a hotel. You get what you pay for. As with everything in life.
Being able to use it worldwide and other things made it O.K. for me. Even though i don't travel as much anymore.

Could you give more details about where in lotus you bought the internet dongle and do you have any idea whether it can be used for internet on an Iphone and/or Nokia N-8 phone for internet?

iPhone comes with 3G Internet access. Just pop in your sim card and subscribe to a service plan. It can also be used as a dongle (tethering feature). Just turn on the feature under settings and connect it to your computer's USB port or via Bluetooth. Even better, you can use it as a personal hotspot and share your 2G or 3G internet connection with other devices via the built-in wifi.

Accept no substitutes.

It's almost all there. I use the 50 hrs THB 200/month package (not listed, but TIT). Really only need 20 hrs, but I tend to forget to turn off GPRS occasionally. Pick a plan or package that fits your needs and lifestyle.

Cheers!
