Monkeys, Snakes, & Giraffes

Postby papaguido » March 1, 2010, 5:25 pm

Road trip to see monkeys, snakes & giraffes. We set out this morning about 830ish for Monkey Park in Kumphawapi. We visited for about an hour walking around the park and feeding the monkeys. The monkeys seem polite when offered a banana, they would come up to my son or daughter and sit until the banana was offered and then they would shyly take it and run off to enjoy the snack. There were a few monkeys around that were a bit aggressive, but they let you know with a snarl and hiss that they didn’t want to be bothered. Monkey park is easy to find, just head for Kumphawapi and it’s off the main street that runs trough the town. The park is on the left hand side as you come into town and there are signs pointing the way.

Leaving Kumphawapi we headed for the King Cobra snake attraction in Nam Phong just off hwy 2039. Again very easy to find, once you get to Nam Phong there’s signage that points the way. Once there I was surprised by the size of the facility (if it can be called that). The set up is about the size of a boxing ring with seating on 3 sides. The snake show is put on about every 15 or 20 min and last about as long. There’s an area with snakes, monkeys and peacocks on display. No entrance fee, but a donation stern is passed around and you give what you want. At the end of the show we took a group picture for a 100bt. Also, typical tourist crap is available.

Leaving the snake attraction we continued on hwy 2039 (heading west towards Kranuan). Having read on another post about a zoo that has giraffes and ostriches we decided to set out and look for it (link provided). About 8K from the snake place on the right is an army base, Fort Prem Somethingorother. At the gate, my wife asked the soldier on duty if there was a “zoo” on the base, he confirmed there was and ask for ID (which he kept & returned when departing) and gave us directions. Again easy enough, we arrived to find 2 giraffes and about a dozen ostriches. We spent about 30min there snapping pics and relaxing a bit in a shaded area. Come to find out later after saying our goodbyes to the animals, food is available across the street to feed the animals. There’s also a lake with paddle boats for rent, the paddle boats rent for 20bt an hour.

All in all it was and enjoyable half day out, the kids loved it and reminded us (nagged) us to come back again soon. Just to reiterate, there were no entrance fees for any of the attractions, except for donations at the snake place and army zoo

Thanks for the info

We left Udon about 0830 and back in town before 1400. Also there's another zoo out there, but we didn't find it. Hoping to get out there again soon to find the other zoo. The name of the zoo is Khaosuankwang Zoo and is located in the town by the same name between Kumphawapi & Nam Phong.

Hi,
If your down that way the Dinosaur park is worth a visit, free and no donations. Building only opened about a couple of years ago, build on a design by a Canadian bloke. Very good and passes a hour or two. Myself i was not inpressed by King Cobra Village. But they put a show on for just the four of us who were there. So good for them.
Cheers Doug.

North of Nam Phong to the east of RTE 2 is Suan Sut Khao Suan Khwang. It shows on Google Earth just south-east of the town of Khao Suan Khwang on RTE 2. Google Earth shows it up in the hills there and has many photos. I noticed a over the road sign several times as I passed through the town on RTE 2 but never have made the time to go down there. From the photos it looks like a nice park/zoo..

thanks for your input on Cobra Village, that's another place I'd like to visit.
