More Bad News for Internet Explorer Users

Postby jackspratt » February 1, 2011, 12:02 pm

Executive Summary

Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a vulnerability in all supported editions of Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a victim to run malicious scripts when visiting various Web sites, resulting in information disclosure. This impact is similar to server-side cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. Microsoft is aware of published information and proof-of-concept code that attempts to exploit this vulnerability. At this time, Microsoft has not seen any indications of active exploitation of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability exists due to the way MHTML interprets MIME-formatted requests for content blocks within a document. It is possible under certain conditions for this vulnerability to allow an attacker to inject a client-side script in the response of a Web request run in the context of the victim's Internet Explorer. The script could spoof content, disclose information, or take any action that the user could take on the affected Web site on behalf of the targeted user.

Not exactly good news for Microsoft, who were rather basking in the complements that Windows 7 was the most secure system they had ever produced. Indeed the SP1 updates that they are about to release are all about things other than patching security holes, which is a bit of a first for them.. :D
But there is a fix...
Microsoft has issued a software patch to defend against attacks, and said it was working to develop a long-term fix.

and, apparently, no one has actually fallen foul of it yet.
Although Microsoft said it had seen no evidence that the glitch had already been exploited by hackers, it warned that research had shown it was a serious threat.

The problem being that many, many users do not regularly update their software for security issues & no doubt now that hackers are now aware of the flaw some will be using it to use non protected machines in the future. According to the beeb 900 Million people are still using IE world wide..

Tend to agree with your comment though Jack, Internet Explorer is just about the last method I would use to contact the internet. Indeed the only times I have used it in the last couple of years is to download FireFox or Google Chrome... :D

Hi,
Jack. Every single systen has faults, not one is perfect. M.S. has at least informed the public of this. I'd rather the devil i know, as he is serving me to my liking, and no problems so far. Other companys prefer not to tell the public about their faults. As M.S. stated thiey have not seen any exploitation of this. I was told some things about the Pent. chip, so I alway got a computor with a A.M.D. chip in it. I suppose the A.M.D. has some faults as well, So i am guilty in this case.
It's like all the hype you get about everything in life. If you took notice of everything, and all the bad, that is said about them i don't think life would be worth living. No matter what system you use please update it reg.
I wonder how many people changed their cars, because of the faults in Toyotas, and have bought another car, which maybe, has worse faults.

I agree douglas - no system/machine is perfect.

In the case I have highlighted in the OP however, a simple and completely free (unlike a substitute Toyota) solution is at hand. If you wish to continue using the error and exploit plagued IE, that is your choice.

To me, FF has been a very obvious and satisfactory choice for many years.
