Where can you rent a motorcycle in Udon and how much does it cost?

If you are talking about something like a Honda Wave then the places that rent are too many to list - just about any 'falang' bar to start with, plus many, many Thai places advertised as you travel around. The price varies considerably (down) with the longer that you rent for. From memory you can rent 1 for about 150 a day but you probably need to be careful on what the 'insurance cover' is like. In many places it is third party only & you will pay (sometimes not cheaply) for any damage done to the bike.
If you are looking for anything on the large side then the only place I can think of is Lek Car rentals. The one thing about Lek is that you can be sure their insurance is first class.

Bob I tried Lek some months ago when I saw their advert here on this site, and they replied that they do not rent out big bikes anymore, Perhaps you could check with them as they are a sponsor here, and if that turns out to be the case then maybe their advert regarding big bike rental needs to be reworked so is not misleading..

I was thinking of a small bike that doesn't go faster than about 40 mph. It's the type that the entire Thai population owns. I've rented one down in Krabi, but without insurance. I figured that I'd be responsible for whatever I damage. Do these rental places in Udon charge for actual cost to repair the damage or should I expect to be charged inflated foreigner prices? And are helmets a requirement in Udon?

Although many travel around Udon helmet-less you will undoubtedly end up getting stopped & fined by the police if you do.
What you are charged for any damages depends on what is written on the agreement that you sign to rent the cycle. Some charge over & above the actual cost of damage as they will claim that you have prevented them from re-renting out the bike until it can be repaired. It is also important that you fully check the bike over before hiring & ensure that if there are any marks they are fully recorded on the hire documentation..

...... it should also be remembered that in many hospitals around the world motorcyclists who don’t wear helmets are more simply referred to as donors #-o

yes wear a helmut otherwise a 200bt fine, and if caught again within 7 days, then look out....much easier to wear a helmut, safe too...also I would take a camera and photo the bike in front of the rental people when you hire it, that way they wont try and con you for damages when you take it back..

I can recommend motorcycle rental from 99+1 Bar on Prajak Road, the same side of the street as Mr Tongs.
You'll see the bikes parked out in front, go inside and ask for Melissa the boss who speaks excellent english.
