Motorcycle-to-motorcycle purse snatching

On 24 October, while a 20yr old female was riding her motorcycle in the vicinity of Udon Christian School, a tall, thin man, age about 20, and riding a Honda Wave motorcycle without a license plate, snatched her orange purse containing about 200 baht, a Nokia mobile phone, and a Bangkok Bank ATM card. The man fled.

Note:
The time of the crime isn't reported.

There aren't many details in the report, so I don't know the time of the crime, nor do I know whether the girl's motorcycle was in motion when the crime occurred.

A policeman ( wife's brother in law) told me it's a known fact that most Thai woman use their birthdate as their PIN number for ATM cards. Ask your lady if she does and if so change the PIN number. When a bag is stolen their is usually some sort of ID with their birthdate on it and a theif will use that to try and access the ATM card.

Well that's very interesting as my wife's wallet was snatched at the very same location
by a guy that fit that description a month earlier! She got a good look at the guy
before he robbed her, so the police were given a good description of him and his bike.

She was at Baan Hoy market about 9:00PM, the thief was sitting on his bike in front
of the market. When she left the market she put her wallet in the compartment under the
ignition of her bike. As she was driving, just before Udon Christian school the guy
drove by her at speed, plucked the wallet from her bike and hooked a right at the
intersection.

I was just happy she didn't get hurt! I didn't mind losing the money so much as the
hassle of replacing ALL her ID and 2 bankcards!

Interesting to note that she called 191 and no one was answering. So I told her to try 1193
(hwy police). All they would tell her is to keep calling 191!

We went to the station the next morning to file a report. Asked the officer why no one was
answering 191, his excuse was that 191 often gets flooded with prank calls or someone mad at
the police calling over and over, so they stop answering the phone for a while.

I find this excuse hard to believe, I think someone was just asleep at the wheel when we were
trying to call.

Anyway, this thief obviously has a pattern. I drive by the market often and have yet to see
any police there after dark. Come to think of it, the only time I've ever seen police out working
after dark in udon is in the falang bar area at closing time!

A woman friend of ours was sitting in the back of a songthaew in front of the big school near the main Nong Khai intersection yesterday... wearing a 1 Baht gold necklace...

Along comes the yaa baa biker, yanks it off her neck, and is off. Seems to be happening more & more these days.

So: careful with those bags, purses, phones, and don't wear/show off your gold... when you're out & about.

Sad sign of these desperate times, and desperate and/or addicted thieves.

MS

the thieves, used the ATM cards to purchase " 9000 " worth of fuel, in 1 go and didnt need to use the PIN number as its done via EFTPOS, and the PTT staff were in on it, as I asked Police to audit the fuel balances, NO WAY was the reply.

Bastards. Sounds like a BOYCOTT of PTT on the Sakorn nakon Road is in order!

Reminds me of another thing that concerns me. I once withdrew a large amount of money from my Kasikorn bank account with nothing more than the bankbook and my signature! (and I doubt she even compared the signature) The teller didn't ask for any ID!
Could anyone walk in with my bankbook and empty my account?

I make sure to keep my bankbook in a safe place now!

A bank book in Thailand is a very important document. With it a stranger could take your money, a little different than the way we do things in the west.

Motorcycle-to-motorcycle purse snatching

At a small village off the NK road a 54 year old lady was at home taking care of her daughters young baby yesterday ;when a thief robbed her of a 5 bht necklace, cut her throat and made off. Neighbours were alerted by the sound of the baby constantly crying some hours later .
from Udon news .
This is a two pronged problem now. Not only is there more criminals prepared to kill, but a 5 bht chain is worth 100k .
A lethal combination .
ijuts rule!

With the price of gold the past few years, I view a gold chain around one's neck the same way I'd view a $1000+ bill or a billfold stashed with cash hanging out of your back pocket. I stopped wearing my 2 baht chain a few years ago.....that'd be the equivalent of about $1700+ hanging on my precious neck. Not worth it!

nice to have a bike fast enough to outrun any of these idiots or gang types, the majority of the Udon punks dont know anything of how to modify a bike to make it very fast.
