Bagels...Plain 49bt, Black Sesame 59bt, Cheese Topped 59bt. Pack of 4, can be found in the bakery shop. Just tried one, not bad for Thai made. Hope Makro continues to bake them on a regular basis, got to give them credit for trying =D>

Don't go rushing over, I bought the last 2 packs

Also Beer Lao, Dark & Light single bottles only.

Brought some this morning, not a bad effort at all, toasted with cream cheese nearly like the real thing.
My gripe with Makro is that they keep the baked goods until they sell, even if thats 2 days later. I have moaned to them but I might as well talk to the wall for all it does, so just get buy by giving the stuff the squeeze test before putting in my trolley.

I must have not been too far behind you FB. I went to the bagel area about 10:30ish and they were all gone. My wife asked the bakery department if they would be making more and she was told that when the bagels sold out each day there would be no more until the next delivery. She said the bagels not made in the the Makro kitchen but were made elsewhere and delivered to Makro.

It appears they've expanded the variety...Garlic Pepper & White Sesame. Go early

After getting shut out a couple of times at the Makro bagel section, I decided to make my own. Not difficult at all but takes a little time as the dough has to rise 3 times (60 min., 30 min. & 10 min.) They bake for 20/25 minutes and the boiling takes just a few minutes. Because I could only fit 6 on my cookie sheet at a time I baked them in two batches. The recipe makes 12 bagels. They cooked up nicely and taste darn good. Here is the recipe I used.

Here is a photo of the final product.

Why go through all the trouble when authentic hand made bagels are available at the WaWe coffee shop (close to McDonalds)? I just picked up a half dozen fresh onion bagels at 20B each. No lines no running to Makro wondering if there will be any left.

When I went to WaWe they were 60 baht each! Are they cheaper to go?

Absolutely. 20B each to go. The "to go" just includes the bagels and no spreads. jaeth also told me that it's not necessary to refrigerate/freeze them either. Simply place the bagels in a zip lok bag or tightly closed plastic container. They will last at least a week without getting hard or growing any mold.

I bought 2 toasted with cream cheese to go. Took them back to UD plaza to show my friend from England what a bagel was. They were good! But 120 bath for 2?

Got nothing to do with trouble or cost fdimike. I just enjoy cooking. I'm retired and cooking and baking are one of the things that keep me busy as well as provide a certain sense of satisfaction. Last week I made four lemon merangue pies and gave a couple to my neighbors. I bake birthday cakes for the family. I'm always experimenting with new recipies and ingredients. It is as much a hobby as anything.

I've eaten the bagels at WaWe and enjoyed them very much. Will most likely eat them there again. I'd recommed WaWe to anyone who wants to enjoy a well made bagel. In fact, I have.

To go versus in shop

Postby unendoras » April 30, 2011, 8:54 am

Yes, the price of bulk bagels to go is cheaper. For six or more, they're 20 baht each. They are not normally available in bulk at the coffee shop, as I normally only make a dozen at a time to make sure they are fresh. Whenever people ask me for bulk, I make them fresh and just meet them at the shop.

As far as makro's bagels, I'm still trying to buy some of them to try, but I haven't seen them in stock yet. I did see that they were 30% cheaper than mine, but they are also 30% lighter (90 gram versus 125 gram), so I think it all balances out. As far as them being softer, I make mine close to a new York style for those who prefer a denser bagel.

In any case, I'm glad that makro carries them now for the benefit of all who love bagels.
