I'm a new member checking in. I was at the base 1966-1967. Would like to know about the members. Thanks.

Are most members of the forum currently living in Udon? I'd do a poll if I knew how.

Phantomdriver, Many members do live in or around Udon. Others have Thai wives or girlfriends in and around Udon, but currently live and work in their own home country, usually visiting their Gf's, wives and families several times a year.

A few others visit Udon looking for a Thai wife or GF, or just to see a less commercialised part of Thailand. :)

I still call it udorn, but most people use udon but still pronounced udorn. If you have not checked out this web site yet, you will find many facts about udorn RTAFB and other Bases during that period.

Thanks for the link. I'm still not clear why the base is called Udorn by US military people instead of Udon. Is it the way the word is pronounced? Is it to seperate it from Ubon? In the past, did the base have a different name from the town?

Probably for the same reason that LBJ referred to Laos as Lay-os. Or nuke-you-lar.
