New shopping developements .

Postby trubrit » January 10, 2011, 2:10 pm

Some may have noticed a new building next door to Ngee Soon supermarket. Its a new branch of the Bangkok wholesale clothing market , Sumpeng. They specialise in wholesale fashion ware . It will also be open for retail sales at wholesale prices.
The second development is on the land opposite the UD center .Planning permission has been applied for use as a shopping area and cinema . Tentatively named UD Platinum .Designed to be an upmarket area to compliment the existing UD, primarily aimed at the tourist market .

Looks like a golden opportunity for someone to open up either a Global House or beer bar next door to Sumpeng. Judging from the merchandise available at the Bangkok outlet, the women will love the place. But, the men??

I think you will find that tourists of all nationalities far outnumber the immigrant farang. This development is obviously in line with the local governors long term plan to make Udon Thani the hub for the entire Issan region. I have been here for the best part of 10 years and I still haven't seen all the tourist attractions I want to . However if by "right mind" you are referring to the sex tourist then I definitely agree with you .

More info on the Sampheng Udon store going up next to the new Ngeesoon. "The store will have all electric appliances, clothing and souvenirs, as well as small product at an affordable price."

Went in there today for the first time. About mid morning 3 cars in the huge car park, didn't look very promising . Inside there were rows and rows of what I would call, junk.. The sort of stuff you see vendors sitting on the floor selling . Plastic baskets, school bags, hand tools from, you know where. nothing at all exciting. No fashion, unlike their Bangkok store. A complete waste of time . Won't go back there . :-"

Sounds like they are aiming for the banock crowd, ten people sitting in the back of a 20 year old pick up that belches black smoke, having a picnic in the car park.

The bannawk (บ้านนอก) crowd gets to shop for stuff like that at least twice a month when most villages sponsor a da laht naht (ตลาดนัด). The traveling market includes all the cheap essentials for the villages including food vendors and music. It's a community event. Sampheng Udon will have a hard time competing with that.
Funny thing about Udon.......Sampheng at one end of the scale (seems more fitting for Udon)...at the other end, the new coffee supply shop I visited yesterday (Aroma Shop) that's selling coffee makers at 165,000 a pop.

'Baan nok' just means 'country' or 'rural' people. Sometimes if I carry stuff around in a 7/11 plastic bag my friends will say that I am 'khon baan nok' until I use something more suitable.
