no indian restaurant in udon

Postby biscuitz » January 19, 2009, 5:20 am

dont understand why there isnt a indian curry house in udon, surely there is a market for it with lots ov expats, i do admit there is a few in thailand but not the best by any standards, either the chefs are burmese or thai & cannot cook indian food right, well to the sort of indian foods were use to, i know indian food is different in india than say in the uk, but the brits did change the style a bit, some farang bars do advertise currys but its straight out of a tin... even in pattaya its total crap... need quality indian chefs from the curry mile manchester ( rusholme ) in udon i think, cooked with fresh herbs & spices with a clay oven for nan bread...NICE

Biscuitz,I Don't think there would be enough customers to support it...or do i think it would ever be an 'Authentic' English one that we know and love.

I can't imagine Indian people moving here to live in isolation from their family and Indian friends to make a few scheckels off of a reltively small customer base of falangs, can you? :-k

Me either.

Besides, spicy Thai food and Thai curry is just fine with me. \:D/

I have eaten Indian food in BKK restaurants and its rather tasty and makes for a nice change. Who said anything about Indian people, half the British are Indian or Indian decent, and there are a lot of those whinging Brits up your way in Udon anyhow. Indian food in Udon would probably go OK.

We are just about to have a new President of African origin, perhaps the Brits could have a new non Brit leader as well. Prime Minister Ahmed Annadinajubratungabunga.

Near where I live in the U.S. there is a small restaurant that has a dual Thai-Indian menu. Makes little sense to me in the culinary sense. I also do not understand how a typical small restaurant can make any money in Udon. Went to the Greenleaf near the train station for their 99B lunch buffet, felt like I was stealing food; had a couple of beers to overcome my guilt.
I think that street stalls with near zero overhead is a better business proposal. May be an Indian food street vendor then?

We are just about to have a new President of African origin, perhaps the Brits could have a new non Brit leader as well. Prime Minister Ahmed Annadinajubratungabunga.

Why?

Is the country you are referring to with the new African President Ghana by any chance? They had a peaceful democratic election recently in which the opposition party defeated the ruling party. And what ever happened to Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings?

And 'we' in Canada are not getting one of those - Africans as President. 'We' do not have Presidents, 'we' have a constitutional monarchy and the head of state in Canada is Queen Elizabeth the Second.

Lastly to keep on topic a bit, I do not see the need for any Indian restaurants in Udonthani.

Arjay, thanks for the heads up but I could not resist responding to the poster...sigh...55555

Small market for authentic (English) Indian here, Indian restaurant kicked off in Korat about 18 months ago but didn't find support and has since closed.
I am a Indian food lover myself, not so keen on the somewhat toned down English Indian. just doesn't have enough ooommph for me.
If your a keen cook its an easy cuisine to master, I am building my tandoori over in the back yard now, will be finished by this weekend.

Errrrr heeeeem, we have one of these currently residing (and cooking) in Udon :fryingpan:

He aint Indian, but he is a Manc, and as far as I know he worked (trained) in "Curry mile" and other resturants in the area.

He cooks the following on a regular basis ......... Rogan Josh, Jalfreize, Doppiatza, Vindaloo & anything else that is requested. They are available to eat at "A Beer too Far" in Nutty Park, or can be ordered direct in small or large quantities (frozen if required). To the best of my knowledge, where possible fresh herbs and spices are used when available. Nan Bread (as well as many other types of bread) can also be provided.

I can asure you that none of these curries "COME OUT OF A TIN"

Try a UK Resturant...then you will see whats tasty and exactly what the Brits are talking about, The Ones on offer in Thailand are too salty and all seem to taste similar and they like to put meat on the bone in them..!,(unless thats your taste of course) i know this is old style and really not the same as we are talking about, but they have improved over the years, the best and nearest dish on offer would be Tikka/Tandoori meats, Rice..well you can't go wrong really, and the breads are good, although not as thick Tasty or puffy as a Naan as we know it, its just the Curry sauces that are missing the boat.
Also The UK ones nowadays mainly hail from Bangladesh and are bengali, venture into the kitchen and not a word of English would be spoken, so that rules out your thoughts of getting one(English/Indian) to open up in Udon, but again still not enough customers to sustain such a place, and its usually more expensive than Thai food, so that would be another factor for Udon Dwellers.

not so keen on the somewhat toned down English Indian

Not sure whats 'Toned' down in a English/Indian restaurant, if you mean heat then Jalfrazi,Chilli masala or something with extra chilli if you wish, others like pathia,Dansak, Dupiaza, Bhuna, Korai's etc cooked right with 'Fresh' Ingredients all of which you can actually taste are superb, also the tenderness of the meat used is also a good sign but not every restuarant is capable of doing this though.
If you are talking about a Korma then that is a creamy sweet taste(which i believe was more catered to the UK resturants), but any restaurant will cook to order..if you want a 'Korma' with a kick then you get one.

And 'Curry mile' never been, if and when i get up that way thats my first port of call...i hear so much about it, would like to compare.
