No subs in udon

Postby fatbas***d » March 11, 2010, 9:23 am

My favorite fast food.
the Italian sub, a simple oblong sandwich that inspired them all. the Italian sub is about 9 inches long and filled with dry-cured Italian meats like salami, capicola, soppresetta, or proscuitto; mortadella is often added to contribute a bologna-like creaminess. It's topped with provolone to help give it some salty bite; a little oil and vinegar for some tang; and giardiniera, for a nice kick. It's simple and straightforward, a cheap workman's lunch wrapped in paper and slid across the counter to take on the road. And yet it is a culinary achievement, a mouthful of contrasting flavors and textures.
When done right, it's about as close to sandwich perfection as one can get.

I know its a faint hope to even procure most of the ingredients in Udon, availble in Bangkok tho, but surely someone can come up with equivalents on their menus. Say a simple corned beef and salad, roast chicken, roast beef salad and pickles, Even that sinister imitation Subway would be better than nothing (just)

I am eating one of those right now in Toronto. Nice. A bit expensive at $6 Cdn. (175 baht).

So why is there no Subway fast food outlet in Udon or in UD Town?

Probably because Issan people don't like eating them and the farang customer base is too low.

I have to admit, that sub does look mighty delicious, I wish I could get my hands on something like that right now.
I think, as mentioned before, if a resturaunt added something like that to their menu, maybe a couple of variations, they would be on to a winner. The book shop comes across as a perfect outlet for selling this kind of thing. If the thais tried to copy it it would just be a gooey mess of sloppy salad, cheap and nasty meat and half a gallon of mayo.

OT... \:D/

I am not sure that is actually true Harry.
A walk around any of the markets in Vientiane will find little old Laos ladies creating & selling just such things - mainly for a non-falang customer base.
Although some of the fillings might be a bit of a struggle to find in Udon I think it is actually the bread that would be a problem sourcing. Quality bread leads to a quality sub - just look at the one that FB has pictured. :D

In Udon, that sandwich would sell for 500 baht.
Why?
Because it's foreign.

Take it or leave it, round eyes.

Why is Subway sinister? Because it's from the from the McDonald's/Starbucks/Microsoft/Coca-Cola family of world domination?

Scary, huh?

Yes you're right, I never thought about that. 60 years of French colonization rubbed off on them. Not sure if the same would apply to Udon. Most of my local friends and family would prefer somtam over a sub any day.

I'd just like to say to fatbas***d, "you suck" for posting that photo! It's 9pm and I'm ready for an evening snack and I had to come across the photo of that sub! Looks delicious.

I'd guess that a place like Chern Chim could serve that up for well well under 500 baht.......if they so desired.

Thank you Parrot, nothing difficult about making a sub or a close copy, I make them at home nut the problem for me is low turnover. Even in the refrigerator salad vegetables go off quickly.
I find I assemble all the ingredients to make a couple of subs and end up throwing away a lot of the fresh materials after 4 days as I am the only one in the family that eats them. Most of the food business up here are run by English or German people so they really not into similar salad vegetable type food. I had hoped that US themed bar opposite the clock would do something similar but he's merely copying the others in food styles as far as I can see.
