Nuclear Power

Nuclear Power. How did we get this free and safe miracle? A Rare Walt Disney Science TV series from 1957, maybe?

I work on Nuclear stations here in the UK even to enter the reactor building you have to go on courses for safety inside the building. When exiting you have to have anything scanned in your tool bag before you leave the building, safety overrides everything and everybody.
England has had 1 nuclear incident in 53 years, until a cheaper way of producing energy is delivered Nuclear is the only way Wind turbines are here only to please the greens and coal or fossil fuel stations emit to many hydra carbons into the atmosphere encouraging global warming.
Although we are not in an Earthquake zone our biggest threat is terrorism and the threat of an aircraft crashing onto one.
Hence we have armed patrols around the site and at Sellafield a no fly zone is in effect with a Missile system in place to bring down any serious threats against the plant.

Thats scary stuff Vlad i didnt realise that there is ano fly zone and missile syatem in place at Sellafield ..... B.S.P power is vitually waste / pollution free .

Disagree, by this generation the human race and most other things will be made extinct by something similar to an ice age, asteroid collision or more catastrophic natural event.

IMHO - Technology into the future will surely deal safely with nuclear waste --- if it is that! Advances in technology will not stand still because of this event, lessons will be learned and nuclear power generation will not cease. A fact of life!

Saw a pretty incredible, eerie film recently called "Into Eternity" about this very issue.

It shows work being done in northern Finland, on a deep underground nuclear waste storage facility.

Philosophers, scientists, and engineers discuss what could or might happen 100,000 years from now, if/when anyone (if they/we) still exist might happen upon this place, called "hiding place" in Finnish.

Mind boggling, really. Very provocative flik. Check it out if you get the chance.

Well when most of the worlds waste is stored at Sellafield extra security is put in place. The rapier system is in place BUT Its whereabouts are not exactly known for obvious reasons going back to our safety in the UK if you even have a small cut on your body it has to be assessed by health physics and dressed by them before your allowed in the reactor building. Ever wondered why all our Nuclear stations are on the coast ??

having been in the nuclear industrey for 20 yrs as a fabricator welder i have always been against nuclear options.there will be a big problem in years to come.its what is stored under ground and we take most of the worlds waste. and my mates at my former job tell me they have just got a 10yr contract they are mowed out with work so long term the **** will hit the fan.it cant stay under ground forever.

Hi,
I have yet to hear all these doom speakers telling me what to replace N.P. with. So far nothing. No good getting rid of it until you have another source of power generation. Wind, water and solar power are a no go, will not supply a tenth of our needs. The very people who complain about N.P. will be the first to complain when they have no electricity in their homes.
Worked for Aldermaston for eight years. When i told people who i worked for, A.W.R.E., you should of seen their reaction, and the rubbish they spouted about it. Made me laugh at what they said, then they got mad because i laughed.

It is true that you cannot just turn off the Nuclear Power stations until you have a replacement. We had the 'dash for gas' back about 20 years ago - but gas reserves are limited, just like oil, so are only a SHORT term answer. We could go back to coal - but this has it's own waste problems, and not just the CO2.

Renewables COULD provide a substantial amount of power - but you have to have a mind shift about the scale needed to really help, which would bring it's own problems (the Severn barrage, at its largest scale would have provided 10% of UK's needs, but it would have changed the entire ecology of the estuary and the Bristol channel).

What the public around the world must realise, is if you want power, it isn't free, and the cost is not just in cash. But we need to plan now. As for nuclear power, we have been relying on science and innovation to find an answer to the waste problem for over 50 years, and the answer is still the same - bury it and hope it doesn't come back. And we can see after the Japanese earthquake we need to scale up the level of disaster protection a LOT.

i am not against nuclear power, but as we found out first time round, it is not 'so cheap it will be free' - thats why no private company wants to build them, unless the government guarantees them a blank cheque. If we want renewables, the problem is power storage - the mind shift is everyone needing batteries to store power, forests of wind turbines, shoals of tidal and wave power generators and square miles of solar cells, covering every roof. It could be done - if there is the will. Geothermal is possible in some places, but we will also need to be less wasteful - it is possible to build homes and offices which need neither heating or cooling in most parts of the world - it just costs more.
