In Ray's case above, assuming his 2008 visa was a 12 month one, just before the expiry he could have done a border run and re-entry, and gained a further 12 month permission to stay - thereby avoiding the need for the 2009 visa.

I have a non-o visa thats ends 10/2-10 multientry , so if i go to Lao the 9/2 and re-entry 10/2 do i get 12 months then?

If it is an OA visa and if you come back on the 9th, yes you have one more year. But you'll be on an extension of stay as your visa will die on Feb 10. If you wish to leave Thailand during this year, you need to buy a re-entry-permit, single or multi. If you leave without this permit, you will have to get a new visa from outside Thailand again.

Semantics I am sure, but you would not be on an "extension to stay" - you will get a further 12 months "permitted to stay" stamp.

You will need a re-entry permit every time you leave and come back within that 12 months, or else the permitted to stay will lapse.

You could also, during this second 12 months, seek an "extension to stay", which will require the usual 800k in the bank, or 65k income, or a combination (assuming the basis is retirement), or whatever the requirements are for "marriage".

A standard non immigrant "O" visa from the UK will get you 15mths here, then you have to reapply for a new visa, this can be done thru an office/embassy ( UK ) outside Thailand ie; Laos, cambodia or Myranmar for a small price ( about 100GBP ) so you have your new visa without the expense of travelling back to the UK. No money in the bank is required unless you apply for a retirement visa.

I have mulitple stamp that say re-entry permit fee paid.

This permits you to re-enter Thailand on your multiple entrys without charge, imagine when you go to Laos and pay your ฿1500 ... THEN you pay it again when you re-enter Thailand!
Hey! ... 4 exits every 90 days @ ฿1500 = ฿6000 ? Thats about the cost of your visa!!

No. The OP has a non O visa. If you go to Laos and come back on the 9th, you will get another 90 days, not a year. During that time you can apply for a 1 year extension at immigration based on retirement or marriage if you qualify.

Benzman2 even if you have a double entry tourist visa Immigration will only give you permission to stay for 60 days.
After 60 days you must exit Thailand & re-enter again (no need to obtain a visa, so in the case of Laos at the Friendship Bridge just go to Laos & return - no need to go to Vientiane). When you re-enter Thailand you will then get the second portion of the double entry tourist visa & another 60 days.
It should be very easy for you to see what you have. On the Thai visa it says Tourist TR then No. of Entry. That will either say 1 or 2.
AS they are re-introducing Tourist Visa Charges on 5th. March maybe they are a little reluctant to give double entry at the moment.

Yeap, S for single entry. You can extend it for 30 days at Immigration when it is nearing expiry. But the extra 30 days goes from the day that you go to Immigration, not from the expiry of the 60 days. Also costs 1,900 baht.

Has anybody had dealings with this company
http://tilalegal.com/thai-nonimmigrant-visa.php
for those of us under 50, and without dependants there, seems like a good price... maybe TOO GOOD
