Outlet Mall

More info about the Outlet Mall, being built near Home Pro/Index, from today's Bangkok Post:

Outlet Mall plans B500m Udon Thani mall

Newspaper section: Business

Outlet Mall Co, a subsidiary of the Pena House Group, will spend 500 million baht to develop a premium factory outlet in Udon Thani this year.

Managing director Pichej Pongpitakmetha said the outlet is being built on a 12-rai plot on the bypass road between Index Living Mall and Home Pro, the hardware and home decoration chains.

The contemporary-style project, Premium Outlet Udonthani, will open in the third quarter this year with 5,000 square metres of space and 120 tenants offering products such as clothing, shoes, golf equipment and houseware.

''We decided to open our outlet in Udon Thani because it is an important city with 1.6 million inhabitants and is in the country's seventh-largest province in terms of population,'' he said.

Udon Thani is located near Khon Kaen, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Loei, Nong Khai and Nong Bua Lam Phu and attracts 2 million tourists per year.

The average income in Udon Thani is about 45,000 baht per year, with two-third of people mainly employed in industry rather than agriculture.

Mr Pichej expects 2,000 to 2,500 visitors at Premium Outlet Udonthani in weekdays and 6,000 to 7,500 per day at weekends. The company expects the mall to break even in six or seven years. The company also plans a mall in Bang Pa-in, Ayutthaya, from 2011 to 2012.

Outlet Mall's sales last year were 1.8 billion baht, up by about 12% from 2008. Growth beat a normal trend of 8-10% despite the downturn as Thais travelled locally more. Spending per head also rose to between 3,000 and 5,000 baht, up from 2,000 to 3,000 baht earlier.

Pena House Group, the manufacturer and importer of fashion brands, has diversified in the last five years after competition intensified in the textile market.

Outlet Mall currently has factory outlets in Pattaya, Cha-am, Khao Yai, Krabi and Phuket.

That's good news, even more choice.
It's just up the road from me.
I wonder if there are other reasons not mentioned in the article, why Udon will have a Outlet Mall, the increasing "farang" community perhaps?

says it all doesn't it? 1.6 mill pop but 1.6 mill x 45,000 PAis still the collective income of a small village in any western country and now we have 6 major super stores, Index, Home pro & global etc. about 50% are probably sustainable the rest supported by ?

Unless being supported by a farang, when that figure, roughly, is required monthly by law. :D

Will members of udon map, have an overwhelming desire to buy their levis jeans (snides) in this place when it's built - or will you go to the genuine levis shop at UD town?. one other thing, it is not possible to buy a pair of genuine levis for 300 baht..that's all

They are saying its a genuine Levi shop in UD Centre and also Central Complex have a genuine Levi shop as well.

Maybe we will see some brand name labels moving ?? depending on what their leases are in Central. Remember Swensens moved location from Big C to UD Centre.

Well we took a walk through today, it is really upscale compared to what we normally do. It reminded me of home with a Hamburger shack on the bottom floor these are very common in the states. The question in my mind is there enough people willing to pay for the labels, I really don't know.

I checked the price on one dress shirt it was a name brand and very nice, even with the 50% discount it was 1200 baht. I get custom shirts made for 600 baht. But, labels mean a lot to some people.

Levis brings up an interesting question, didn't the Levi factory shut down several years back?

The Levi store there is not opened or stocked yet. The Golf shop was very impressive, I don't play. But it looked great.

In any event very nice place

I will take a look in there, after the initial surge has calmed down, but doubt I'll spend any money.
I do not, thank goodness, have a great need to dress up these days and it would have to be a very special occasion for me to buy the REAL thing and pay the comparatively high Thai price which comes with it.
I like to think I look smart, if casual, when I do go out, usually e.g. wearing a sport shirt from Pratunam, Bangkok. Excellent copies at 150 baht each!
And with Bo Bay here smartening itself up considerably, I can probably find what I need here.
It will be interesting to see (rather like the supermarkets situation) if the place attracts enough customers.

I called in late last neet , was pleasantly suprised that they had quite a few outlets selling fat blokes size stuff !? BUT still no SCUNTHORPE UTD FOOTY SHIRTS anywhere ........... an untapped market would sell like hot cakes or even bread puddings .
