Pad Thai recommendations

We have a friend who will be visiting and wants good pad thai. I noticed a while back that the Irish Clock's pad thai is recommended. Does anyone have any other places to offer?

Bearing in mind that I am not in Udon at the moment so it is at least 3 months since I have visited.... :D
BUT...
The first food outlet in the Complex Food Hall - far left hand side as far away from the 'bar' as possible if you are in the Food Hall & looking out of it - do a very good seafood one - the 'trimmings' (extra chilli, beansprouts, crushed nuts etc.) they have are good & plentiful too.
There is also a small Thai restaurant directly opposite Chern Chim also have done me a very nice pork one. They do not actually advertise it on their menu (which is really a noodle soup based one) but will do it. It is a very basic Thai style cafe though, so don't expect too much in the way of amenities... :D
Both places are at the cheap end of the market & both are really 'daytime' eating places as well, but none the worse for that... :D

Bob obviously has good taste in food! After trying Pad Thai at many, many places, I too have now settled on the place Bob likes at the food court in the complex/plaza. What I particularly like is that they don’t load it up with oil like most other places. Priced at 35 to 45 baht (with seafood), it is a very good value for your baht, and, I think, that they will load up with extra seafood, if you would like, for some extra bahts.
This place makes another dish that I like also; best that I can describe it as an omelet over bean-sprouts and shell fish.
I will slightly modify Bob’s direction though: facing the long arm of the L-shaped food stalls, this unit is the second one from the end of the longer arm.

Not far from the SE corner of Wattananuwong & Adulyadet rd, small shop that specializes in Pad Thai. Also, make a version of Pat Thai called "Korat Thai", a little different and quite good. They use sugar, so if not liking it sweet make sure to tell them to hold the sugar.

For take away, a road side stand near the Chinese gateway to Nong Boa park/lake off of Phosi rd. The stand is easily identified with the "888" on their sign.

I have tried both the place Bob mentions, and the place inside the Tops supermarket (Complex top floor), in the corner where the drinks are sold.

I prefer the latter. :D

The name of the shop on Adulyadet rd is "Lopburi".

Still trying to work out where in the food hall Bob's recommendation is, but felt I should point out that many of the stalls are now closed in preparation for further building work of the new center .In fact the whole place is starting to be a bit of a ghost town with windows shuttered, escalators bordered up and stalls empty .

This is good information. I quit on Pad Thai as my few introductions to Pad Thai left me unimpressed.

My practice is to by luck happen to find a tasty Thai dish and if I like it come back to the same restaurant for more. IMO the Thai eaterys have different recipes for a Thai foods and I go back to the one that satisfies me with that particular dish. I don't care to experiment much.

My favourite Pad Thai restaurant was on Sri Chomchun Road half way between 7-11 and Le Cellini, they were always busy every night which is a good sign. I've tried quite a few places and this IMO was the best. Their Pad Thai is just how I like it, lot's of prawns, noodles and plenty of lime and bean sprouts. Later they relocated to their home address (Soi Phompakhai) due to family commitments, I went there a couple of times but haven't been for a while now so I'm not sure if they're still open or not. It's a little out of the way so I stopped going.

I've circled their approx location, maybe I'll try again today or tomorrow to see if they're still there.

tried a few mentioned but by far this is worth a try.

Off the Ring road onto the Yellow Bridge into ROM YEN Village, the first Restaurant over the Yellow Bridge on the Left ( well there is a concrete wall on the right so dont try that one ) it is superb, 30 Baht, it will have you coming back I am sure.

Not sure who owns it but there are about 5-6 little restaurants on the old empty block that was 6-9 months ago.

Cheers Chaps :guiness:

Any chance you've been back to the Soi Phompakhai location, Lee? I'm interested.

I haven't checked out the Rom Yen location, yet, but if anyone has other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Anyone near the night market serve up Pad Thai as their specialty?

I'm sorry I forgot to give you an update. I checked the place out last week but unfortunately it was all closed up, maybe their new location didn't work out, it was a little off the beaten track.

One of my favourite lunch time Thai restaurants at the moment is inside Home Pro, I can't remember the name off the top of my head but they serve excellent yum and somtam (Bangkok style), the chicken & cashew nuts is excellent too. They have Pad Thai on the menu so I'll check it out next time and report back.

Pad Thai recommendations

Quite honestly, I've had a hard time finding Pad Thai in Udon that comes close to what I eaten in central Thailand. It is on a lot of the menus here but, in my experience, doesn't measure up to the Pad Thai found in Bangkok and surrounding areas.

I'll keep on trying locally and will try some of the places mentioned on this thread. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. I think Issan folks simply prefer other, more regional food and really don't have Pad Thai very high on their list of favorites. I know my wife will eat it only occasionally and much prefers traditional Isaan fare.
