Patong

Postby Kudjap or Bust » October 29, 2006, 9:06 pm

Who knows the law on Patong?

A few of the local guys in our village have asked the wife to lay a patong court (not sure if its called a court but that will do) next to her shop. She has refused initially telling me that you are only allowed to play patong at government grounds.

Does anyone know if this is true...

Is that the French sport with metal 'boules' you're talking about? If so then it's called 'Petanq'.

Patong is the name of a saucy beach in Phuket.

Apologies for my spelling ignorance. Yes this is the game I mean
So what about the law, is it true you can only play on government owned or government specified courts (or whatever they're called before someone ticks me off for getting it wrong)

Well I play 2 or 3 times a week on a surface located on the local police station, which is govt land, but apparently it doesn't have to be, you can make one anywhere, but the big no no , is betting on the results. If there is any form of gambling taking place on the games the land owner will be prosecuted for organising a gambling ring.Without betting on the results it is just another sport.
The above was advise from the local C of P.

  Looking at BM's picture of the girls from Patong, the one on the rightside of the group, with the cleavage, might have the equip for playing Patanque

I have a friend that just got back from Brighton! While there,he picked up two sets of patanque balls and has been bugging me to play,so I will give it a go!

Val,thanks for the reminder about gambling. It is almost natural to ''bet'' a little something.Would hate to get in trouble for such a silly indiscretion :)

OK thanks Val, I had a chat with the wife and she now tells me she'd be worried if she builds a court (what do you call the area they play on?) the locals will be betting on the resuilts, so I guess thats the end of that venture

it seems popular in village's,along with Cock fighting, they play on a dirt/hardish surface, i have seen men getting excited and heard plenty of shouting going on, so you can "bet" that there is money involved,or maybe they just play with their chums to while away the late afternoon early evening hours or simply too unwind after a hard day. :)

I played this game several times here in Thailand.
Never had a problem.
I played with farangs as well as thais.
Sometimes there was gambling going on.
There were even moments when the police was there.
After some time the police started making bets also.

We know that the laws are not always enforced, but how would you like it if someone important reported you to the police for gambling and a few days later, you were back in Falangland.
If Kudjap's wife is worried about problems in the future because of gambling, she probably has reason to believe that the court would not be worth taking a chance.
When laws are selectively enforced, you are in a precarious position!
