Paying Homage to Udonthani

Postby Laan Yaa Mo » May 9, 2009, 10:50 pm

Well, here is that delightful singer, Jintara Poonlarb, again. She is singing a song about Udonthani and mentions Nong Khai too.

The title of the song translates as, 'I forgot to save Udon in my heart' (Leum jai wai Udon), and it was released on 30 June 2005.

On second thought maybe this is not a tribute or paying homage but it is sending a message about Udonthani.

Note the way that Udon is spelt in the video - 'Oo-dorn'.

Also of interest is the mosaic in the background.

Enjoy.

Luvverly jubberly, Uncle Tilo.

Is it true the lady has massive ears which is why she cuts her hair into a bob?

55555...well, I don't know for sure about that since I have never got close enough to inspect her well enough. In fact, I have yet to see her in person but Jintara does have a touring season, and if she is up and about this coming August-September, I will try to give you a better and more detailed report.

It would be a shame if her most notable physical attribute was a set of ears to match those of Prince Charles! I wonder if the Prince ever thought about a 'bob' hairstyle? Someone should suggest that to Camilla. The next time they are in your neighbourhood...

Did you ever get that pm I sent you about that delicate subject a week or so ago?

Tilo, I would pay good money to see that jug eared German fop singing about Udon Thani.

Now who else sings about this famed city?

I am trying to find another song about Udon. The only other Udon song I have come across to date is again by Jintara.

That video is in the mail to me now and I should be able to post it in about three weeks.

Loei has also been covered by Jintara. It is on Udonmap festival thread started by Git).

Loso has a song about Nakhon Ratchasima (The Korat Blues), which I will put on the favourite song thread in awhile.

Tai Oratai has a song about Nakhon Panom and the very famous nearby wat that she weaves into a love story. I think she also has songs about other Isaan towns/cities.

I will keep looking.

Khun Westerby, you get a quick glimpse of them here, Jintara's ears I mean, and yes, the bob might be a good way of covering them (ears again) up.

This song is one of her most famous and was recorded as part of the master's series. This series is to preserve morlam-luktung recordings.

I do not know how old the recording is, but I think this live version is from 4-5 years ago.

The song is about the struggles of life for an Isaan girl (phu saao).

It would fit in for many women who live in Udonthani Province and Isaan too.

Ask Mrs. Khun Westerby, she will understand this much better than me.

Aah, the travails of a young lady in jangwat Udon, excellent. I remember once telling my Outlaws that 'luk tung' meant 'children of the fields' and they all fell about laughing.

BM, that is probably what both Diana and Camilla said of Charles...no, wait, you are referring to Thai/Lao style ears.....aren't you?

I hope this is not putting you in a sticky situation of which you will, no doubt, wax eloquently. 55555

There's another guy sings about Udon and I can't remember who it is, I don't think it's Morlam.

Is this the one Khun Westerby?

The title is, 'Thai Monks Chanting/Isaan/Udon Thani', and it is a live performance as can be seen at the end of the video.

Okay, okay, maybe this is not the one you meant, but it was the only one I found googling songs about Udon Thani. You must admit that the chanting in Pali is compelling listening.
