Places to stay in Vientiane

Postby Ray.Charles » February 6, 2012, 12:02 am

Thinking about doing a 'wine-run' combined with a couple of days' stay. I had seen some info here on places to stay over there, but I can not find them now. Please help.

Riverine Guest House on the Meekong is the best!

Kop Jai Duhr is a great place for a meal and a cold beer as well as the rooftop bar called Bor Phen Yang!

Enjoy your stay!

Thanks, Bob.
BIGAL, I can not find a website for Riverine Guest House; they are not on Agoda either. How far is it from the central area?
The only time I stayed in Vientien was at a relatively old but fancy riverfront hotel, that had a good massage house and a nightclub attached to it.

Ray, sound like you stayed in the old government "Lang Xang" or million elephant hotel.. just across the river road from the embankment and a 3 minute walk to the city fountain (Nahm Phou).. Since Lao hosted the Asia Games a couple of years ago there are dozens of new hotels/motels/guest houses throughout the city..

Ray,
Google "Vientiane Laos" It has 75 hotels and gives you up to date prices, cheaper than walk in prices. And reviews, location, and ratings. And guests comments, and yes they do include bad comments.
Would not myself recomend an hotel as my views might be different than others.
Cheers Doug.

The Lane Xang Hotel is old and in dire need of renovation. The Riverine is ok, but nothing special. I will suggest 2 places depending on budget:
Lao Orchid Hotel, which is central, very nice and is $50.00 pn
The Souphaphone Guesthouse, central, nice large rooms,a/c for $25.00 pn

Places to stay in Vientiane

Stayed here for a couple of nights last year. Right on the river on the North Western side of Town. Walking distance from their "Farang Alley" (if you want to call it that, river side Farang bars) It has it's own bar and restaurant on the top floor, all in all well worth the little more than one would normally pay in this area of the world.

Hi Rufus: thanks for the warning about the Lane Xang Hotel. My stay there was, I think, over 5 years ago; it was fine at that time.
I can pay upto $50/night. I prefer to be close to the river and the city center, if possible.
Dero: your link is broken, but I could redirect to a website with some hotel listings.
Thanks to everybody who are trying to help me.

If one wants to splurge a bit, I recommend the Salana Boutique Hotel near Wat Si Saket downtown is delightful. The hardwood and stone finish is amazing and service is quite good. It's also a 1/2 block from Makphet Restaurant, 1 of my favorite spots. We were in a 6th floor penthouse corner suite with an amazing view for about 5,000 baht - not cheap but after 5 trips and 3 hotels, I don't see trying another after seeing this place.
I am married to a beautiful Thai woman from Udon.

Stayed a couple of nights this week at the Seng Tawan Riverside hotel at the north end of the town, away from the busy areas but still no more than a ten-minute walk. Booked through Agoda, cost was $45/day tax included. Room was large and nicely done, but no river view. Rooms facing the river were higher priced, but there was only a trickle of water on the Thai side (Sri Chiang Mai). The restaurant on the top floor was the feature attraction of the hotel. Decent breakfast included in the room charge.
Had Indian food at the Nazim’s (opposite to Lao Orchid hotel) one night: good and very inexpensive (less than 300 baht for 2).
Van back to the bridge, if booked at the front desk, is 600 baht; step outside and you can get one for 300-400 baht for the same trip.
