Prince Charles hints at 'Queen Camilla'

Updated 16 minutes ago

Prince Charles has said for the first time that his wife Camilla could be crowned queen, reopening a debate over the status of the woman he married eight years after the death of Princess Diana.

His comments in an interview with the US network NBC come days after Britain's royals were back in the spotlight with the announcement that Charles' son Prince William is to marry Kate Middleton.

Charles' words, which were recorded in August at a castle in Scotland but only being broadcast this weekend, are apparently at odds with the official position after the couple wed in 2005 that Camilla would have the title Princess Consort.

Charles hesitated after he was asked whether Camilla, whose current title is the Duchess of Cornwall, would become queen if and when he accedes the throne after Queen Elizabeth II.

"Well I mean, that's, that's, well, we'll see won't we? But, that could be," he told NBC.

This should be the final nail in the royalist coffin in Australia and make our British friends choke on their Weata Bix..

I reckon Charlie deserves his time in the top job =D> - whether or not Camilla becomes queen is not all that relevant. :D

Ah, maybe my mistake Laan Yaa Mo & a new thread was more appropriate. :D :D
I am not Charles biggest fan I will admit but i don't think he has ever got many breaks from the press either.
Can't be easy, training for a job for 60 odd years & when most people are thinking of retiring he is just about to start!!
I actually think that it might be sensible for him to step aside & let Will or Harry have the job when it finally becomes vacant.
Don't know what my attitude would be to a constitutional monarch if I was from one of the Commonwealth States. The position is largely ceremonial as far as the actual constitution & lawmaking goes however the alternative, a republic, usually has a President instead. As that does seem to be definitely a political position (with all that entails  ) subject to frequent high level & costly elections I think the UK should stick with what it has, no matter who is in the chair.

From an Ozzies point of view, there appears to be an unwritten law, that says, the Republical debate will be left alone and no further push from the govt for a referendrum , whilst Betty still sits on her throne.

I think the British public might jump the generation and give young Harry a chance , something his mother didnt get from the inside.

Might I first point out that for Prince Harry to get his chance it would take the death or abdication of HM Queen Elizabeth. The same for her son Prince Charles and his first son Prince William ,as Prince Harry is third in line of succession behind them . Highly unlikely I think .However a scenario that seems to have a lot of support from the general British public is for the succession to jump a generation and go direct to Prince William upon the Queens abdication .This will give us a modern minded, forward thinking and obviously compassionate person to be our King . The problem HM faces is that her son and his wife are not wholly acceptable to a major proportion of the population, hence Her dilemma and possibly Her reluctance to abdicate. Not dissimilar to other, unconnected dynasties .In the meantime Her Majesty appears to be in good health and very strong for her age as witnessed at the recent cenotaph Remembrance ceremony. Long may She continue to Reign .

IMO and just as a complete outsider looking in, Charlie will take the reign on Mums abdication or untimely demise. For him to even hint that his missus would become Queen rules out Williams immediate chances be it popular or not.

If the Queen lives as long as her Mother there's a possibility of her outliving Charles. Problem solved.

Glad to see Udonmap is so topical... :D
According to two polls released in the UK this weekend.
Britons want William, not Charles as next king

Not sure of the size of the sample, or exactly what question was asked...
