Please recommend an anti-inflammatory medicine!

Postby semperfiguy » May 1, 2011, 8:16 pm

For the past 5 years I have been using diclofenac 75 mg twice a day for inflammation and pain associated with osteoarthritis. It is of the family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and is a generic drug which only costs around $15 back in the States for a 90 day supply. After I ran out several months ago my wife suggested I try POX 109 (Piroxicam 20 mg), another NSAID produced locally, but the drug does not help and the side effects are intolerable for me. Just 10 days ago I found the diclofenac at a local pharmacy at 2 baht per tablet, which is not a bad price, but it was dispensed out of a large bottle with a broken seal. I suspect that it was one of the counterfeit drugs that are being produced and God only knows what ingredients they are putting in those things. Anyway, the side effects are horrendous and I desperately need to discover a new inexpensive drug for my pain/inflammation without the side effects of ringing in the ears, headache, tightness in the chest, depression, weight gain and overall lethargy. I could visit the doctor and get mutiple prescriptions over time until I find a drug that works best for me, but I'd rather have you forumites recommend something that works best for you first. At 62 I'm sure I'm not the only expat in Udon that takes something for the pains of arthritis. My neck, shoulder joints, knees and hips are all aching and it's very difficult to sleep at nights. Please help!

Kjell, thanks for the quick reply. Does one have to see a doctor at the hospital in order to purchase from their drug counter, or can I just walk in and request the drug directly from the pharmacy? I actually prefer to try something different than the diclofenac, so it would be nice to hear what others are using for similar pain/inflammation.

You might want to try Celebrex. You can buy without prescription at any pharmacy store. I buy mine from a wholesale drug outlet in Udon and price is not what I consider prohibative.

I use Norgesic which is an anti-inflammatory coupled with a mild pain reliever. You do not need a prescription nor do you need to see a doctor. However a note of caution,if after two to three days the symptoms have net decreased then full medical investigation should be carried out in order to ascertain the reason for the inflammation.

Naproxen sodium is what I use for my lower back pain. Not expensive here, but certainly a LOT cheaper in the States believe it or not. Here, they sell it in horse tablet size. I would have to break it in thirds or half to not have side affects. Do not take on an empty stomach and you should feel fine within an hour and for the next several or so. I take sparingly to avoid building up a tolerance. Usually only when really painful or before I head off to the mall or sometimes before going to bed.

A neurosurgeon also prescribed Celebrex for the occasional migraine (I get from dealing with so many people with zero common sense).

I bought Diclofenac soluble on the internet from online pharmacy, excellent and very cheap, the postage cost more than 500 tablets. Tablets $12 postage $25
https://www.alldaychemist.com
I would also like to find alternative to Diclofenac but haven't found anything that works.

You can get Diclofenac at Lotus / Health Up section in original at ring road and Nong Khai rd intersection. In bubble packs, inexpensive. I get mine there when in town.

Yes, I would recommend Cerebrex and Norgesic available from most pharmacies, or at 3 times the price through the hospital pharmacies, if you want to combine obtaining them with a visit and some advice from a hospital Doctor.

SFG, Like a few before me have said, celebrex! I use it with no side effects what so ever. You can get them in 2 strenghts, 250 mg and 400 mg. I find the 250 mg works very well for me. Severe pain in what ever form you have it is awful and can cause serious side effects such as mood swings etc. Be careful what ever you decide to take and best of luck to you!

P.S. I hope the neighbours arent still adding to your woes!
