Thai police to crack down on teen sex on Valentine's Day
Thai police will deploy special teams to Bangkok's night spots on Valentine's Day in a bid to prevent teenagers from having casual sex on the lovers' festival, according to an official.
Some 70 police officers will patrol Internet cafes, shopping malls, night clubs and discos to detain teens aged under 18 after 10:00 pm, said Major Kamol Kaewsuwan, deputy Bangkok Metropolitan police commissioner. The age of consent in Thailand is 20.
"I hope that all teenagers understand that love does not always need to end up with sex," Kamol said, adding if teens were caught, police would reprimand them and call their parents.
The effort is part of a drive to prevent teenage Thais from becoming infected with HIV, after the health ministry reported last year that the disease is beginning to hit younger and younger people here.
While Thailand has long been praised for its success in curbing infection and death rates from AIDS, the disease is starting to infect new groups, including teens, as prevention programmes wane.
.
There have been more than one million people infected with HIV in Thailand since 1984. Today, nearly 600,000 Thais live with the disease.
