Bangkok’s alcoholic farang population “unpredictable”

29 Jun 2011

Thailand’s police have called up all reserve staff for a full show of force ahead of this weekend’s election, as a precaution against unrest and violence from angry, sober alcoholic expatriates during the ban on alcohol sales.

The ban, in accordance with national election law, prohibits retail alcohol sales at stores, bars and restaurants from 6pm Saturday to midnight Sunday. The 36-hour period is traditionally a high-risk period in areas with high concentrations of expats, such as Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok and large swaths of Pattaya.

“Due to the importance of this election, we are taking no chances with expatriate sobriety-related violence,” said a stern National Police Chief Police General Wichean Potphosri. He justified the deployment of over 20,000 additional security officers nationwide as a necessary precaution against “deranged, sober foreigners................”

But will the extra 20,000 security forces be sober and will they challenge the other security forces on duty to show who is the soberist of all!

I feel sorry for the four to five million alcoholics that will suffer immense hardship through this arid period in Thai political hooha. :-k

Not in a humorous vein. There are two mini buses full of BIB leaving my village for the wilds of Udon tomorrow for the sole purpose of discovering which bars are flouting the non drinking law after 6-.pm .They expect it to be quite a profitable experience . :-"

The question the Police chief should be asking is how many tests will be carried out on his own men. Most flout all the laws with impunity, may be we should have Quote ' deranged farangs ' checking up on the BIB

Another day of hypocrisy in Thailand.

Do we see the BIB on the Buddah Lent days, HM birthday on Dec 5th, etc

Beware of Thais ordering alcohol in any expat restaurents, there is no such thing as a non guilty plead for entrapment over here !!

I don't/can't believe the quote in the OP, nor this quote:

There are two mini buses full of BIB leaving my village for the wilds of Udon tomorrow for the sole purpose of discovering which bars are flouting the non drinking law after 6-.pm .They expect it to be quite a profitable experience

It all sounds like a wind up to me, that anyone would seriously consider devoting manpower to such a futile exercise.

Futile .exercise Arjay?I don't understand why so many on here complain about the lawlessness of Thais and the unwillingness of the BIB to enforce them then when it comes to a law that intrudes on their status quo, they talk as you do . Lets get this straight, rightly or wrongly the law see drinking alcohol as a danger to the election process and it is forbidden to sell it from 6pm tonight until midnight tomorrow .So they are enforcing it . Whats a wind up about that?
If you are not interested in my heads up, up to you . It could save some a lot of money, 20k being the fine for selling it , or an overnight stay in jail as the courts are not open until Monday .You are either a law abiding citizen or your not . It is not a selective thing .

The question as stated is not , why would the police go on a tour to catch out places selling alcoholic liquor' RATHER 'Why do they bother'
Licensed premises are for sure an easy target, but most Thais I know if they want to drink will find it somewhere, the little village Mum and Pops store the local whatever will sell no matter what, with complete impunity. it is a face saving exercise to show that they are attempting at least to uphold a law which at best is flouted probably in every village in the country.

Thais by their very nature will find any reason or means to circumnavigate any law in this country if they want to and many do from the very rich to the very poor.
You only have to look at the way in this election that in many places certain advertising pictures of some politicians have been damaged while next to them others have remained unscathed. Some next to Police stations to understand the thought processes or lack of them of the BIB.
A person said to me the other day ( a foreigner who has been here for many many years ) he has never met a more hard headed , stubborn and selfish people than the Thais and they are getting worse, I do not neccessarily agree with his comments but they do make one think about the Thais you know some do fall into that category and with regard to politics they are certainly hard headed and stubborn.

I made the rounds in downtown Nong Khai at about 8:30 PM.Most of the falang bar/resturants were closed.I found 3 open,One on the promenade with 2 touristy couples mid 30's and 4 Thai gals ,all drinking bottle beer openly, music and all lights going!
Another had to local expats and 2 Thai gals.probably drinking,I don't know as they had the lights out,but I know the owner and she called out to me to come in,which I didn't.
The 3rd one, looked closed,no customers, but 3 girls out front waving me in.I didn't stop there either!

I didn't go out the Rim Kong RD. where there are several falang venues, but my guess, since they are not girly bars, they would have been officially closed!

Other than the main road through town,Prajak Rd.,the town was almost closed down, quieter than usual!
I didn't see a cop anywhere in my travels,at least not in uniform. It looked like a Holday and Noon time, when the cops all disappear at the same time!

Took the wife to the local polling station for her to cast her vote. Was one BIB present to keep the rowdy farlangs under control. Not to hard as I was the only Farlang present, maybe the rowdy ones will show up later.

wife went to the local Wat polling place. Exceptionally long lines, very hot, with a couple of fights breaking out due to frustration with the waiting. One guy fell into an epileptic fit and hit his head on a rock when he fell. BUT!! massive turnout for the Moo Ban area..
