Poom Me Homemade Ice Cream Shop

Postby UdonExpat » May 16, 2010, 8:26 am

I visited a great little ice cream and coffee shop yesterday. The ice cream was creamier and tastier than Swensen's and the coffee as good as any available in town.

It's on Hlang Pramong Road south of the Posri Road intersection where VT Vietnamese Restaurant and Wat Phothisomporn are located. G9 on udonmap.

It's worth a visit.

To know whether it is worth a visit or not away from Swenson's, do have any prices available that might lure me in August?

The OP is talking about ice cream, not buying a new car. Go on Tilo, be brave and give it a go without knowing the price.

OT....OMG.... \:D/

hangsaboot, why dont you go halves with tilo and share a ice cream and share the cost, that way neither of you would go under in such hard times. you could toss a coin for first lick.

I'm sure that you could go to the loan company and get some help paying for it there if you don't want to share.

Back on track.

A single scoop was 39 baht. A scoop with brownie and real whipped cream was 80 baht. A hot mocha was 40 baht.

Okay, chin up, I am part of the British Empire. I shall take a walk in the hot midday colonial sun in August to try this ice-cream.

Great atmosphere and nice service from the three stylish sisters (this is NOT a frumpy place), carrot smoothies are good and reasonably priced.

My thoughts, too. Very upscale for Udon. Everything was so well done that I had to ask if it was a franchise; it isn't.

Poom is the name of one of the sisters' son.

Very swish ice cream place , on entering the place you would think it would seem to be more at home in swanky parts of Bangkok, not in outer Udon ! It is beautiful ice cream cafe ! It is more of a cafe and ice cream cornet place, than Swensens. The glory of Swensens are the ice cream sundaes.
In Poom'E there are only 4 ice cream sundaes available, well , i say ice cream sundaes, they largely consist of fruit ! The ice cream tastes distinctly home made, from milk, not the creamy choc sauce drowned heaven that is Swensens. But the fruit sundaes ARE total works of art, very very beautifully presented. I felt like taking a photo, it seemed too good to spoil the perfection of the jauntily placed strawberry and kiwifruit .
But as a morish treat, guaranteeing that you return, it is NOT ! Call me junk food addict John, but IT IS NOT SWENSENS !
There are many delicious sounding coffees and fruit juices on the menu, expensive for Udon, but far far cheaper than "Coffee World" and Starbucks. The capuccino coffee was very good, milk a little scalded, no chocolate added, as is the norm in Thailand.
Summing up, a place to impress by the artistic beauty of the frozen creations , rather than a tasty treat. Yes unique to Udon, surely ! But ice cream home made and not quite up to the standard of the decor and beauty of the 4 sundaes (only) on the menu. I would like to see MORE sundaes on the menu !
The cornet ice cream looked ok, nothing special, lacking the massive amounts of colours and E numbers of Thai desserts (which is good). Again something missing about the ice cream, not at all creamy.

Udonuk1, you sound like a cross between Lloyd Grossman and Mr Whippy. Having said that, you did get me lickin my lips. I take it your giving this place the thumbs up?

Mr Whippy ? hahaha

Tell us all , your opinion Sargeant when you are OUT of limbo !

I went back again today hehe, it is a place to impress a Thai lady with superior drinks, decor and crockery, not a place to go for good ice cream ! Drinks above average quality
