It appears I am in a similar situation to yourself.. regarding hotels,etc.
I too have just booked a room for the first 2 nights of my next visit.. mid April - mid July.
I understand that the "Green plague" predominantly infests the top end hotels, etc.... and, although I usually stay at Charoensri Grand or Ban Chiang (first 2 days), I have decided on JAN Condotel this time... I shouldn't think you would have any real problems with accom, unless of course you intend staying in top end places.
There are many good apartments to be had in Udon, (AEK Udon, Heritage, Udoncabana, etc.) from around 4,000 Baht/month upwards.
April is usually a busy time, as it's Songkran.. but I can't see June will be a problem.

Yes we the "Green plague" usually infest hotels that are contracted for all service members during the period of the exercise. Depending on the size of the force, 2 or 3 hotels maybe contracted. The selected hotels are the only authorized billeting for the visiting forces. I'm sure you find adequate accommodation, unfortunately the prices will probably be higher due to the infestation of the "Green palgue".

Hmmm.. appears I may have caused offence with my "Green plague/Green palgue" comment No offence was intended, I actually picked up the term elsewhere on the forum...

. With 24 yrs of service I've developed a rather thick skin. Besides I know exactly how it is when we invade or infest an an area. If I'm not a participant, than I tend to stay far away as possible.

It was referred to as the "Green Machine" when I served back in the middle ages, eons before the desert cammies. Any information that you can pass along regarding start/stop dates for Cobra Gold or contracted hotels? Planning a trip but trying to avoid staying at the in-laws unless absolutely necessary in the unlikely event that hotels are solidly booked.

Hi Ron, yep the Green Machine is still in use, also the "suck" or "the big green weenie" when somethng is not going their way. Anyway, I don't have any info on CG. Seems to be OpSec (opertional security), specific dates, units, and pertinent info hasn't been released (I bet the bargirls in Pattya know, probably have the entire training schedule for the fleet). Should I hear any "scuttlebut" I'll post it.

Nothing classified about these terms, BM. Scuttlebutt meant rumors or info during my military days. Big green weenie referred to the US Army or Marine Corps in somewhat derogatory way. Why green? The uniforms, of course. The "suck" is a term used to derisively refer to the Marine Corps by the lower ranking enlistees, I think. Back in my day this term was the "crotch". Now aren't ya glad you asked?

"ole timers"? Spot on, Rito. Older than dirt. Wore brown shoes and fired the M-1, not at the same time tho. Thanks for the link. It's helping to clear out some cobwebs. It's good to see they're still teaching the new breed all about Chesty, too.

Better get this back on thread topic or mod may intervene. Anyone know if the Charoen is one of the military contracted hotels? This has been our usual landing spot while in Udon. If so, no big worry since there seems to be a lot of good places to stay in/around Udon these days.

Brown shoes huh. I'm sure you've seen the new digital pattern camoflaged uniform, along with that we went to tan suede boots. No more starching or spit-shining, stictly wash & wear. Anyway, the CG06 dates are 15-30 May.
As for hotels, probably occupy the same hotels as the year before, if anyone remembers may they can post the info. BTW, next year's CG07 is scheduled for 8-18 May

Okay, now we know when the lads are coming lets give them a good welcome to OUR town. Remember they didn't ask to be here, I'm sure they themselves would rather be back home.They are , for the most, only young, compared to most of us, so lets be tolerant and remember we were, believe it or not, of just such a tender age long ago.
They will be bringing a much needed injection of cash into the local economy and , dare I say it, a breath of youthful joi de vivre into the nightlife scene. If I was a local girl I would appreciate being a young mans sweetheart rather than an old mans darling, for just two short weeks.

I know last year they were at the Ban Chiang, Napali and the Charoensri hotels, I hope Silver Reef gets some of that action. Would be nice for him and a nice shot in the arm. Not sure what other hotels they stayed.

I remember the starched fatigues, M-1 rifle, M3A1 submachine gun, 50 cal. and M16. I even carried a 38 Smith & Wessen or 45. Dang that was long ago. I can't forget those days stepping out on a skip of bird with M60 hanging from the doorway. Watch out charlie I got to :lol:

An excellent and positive post, Val. In my time, and maybe yours, it was claimed that 10% of the guys in uniform caused 90% of all their unit's problems. Most of these men will be respectful and well-behaved so we shouldn't condemn the whole lot of them because of the actions of a few miiscreants. Maybe they'll bring a few MPs (mods) with them this time, hopefully.

So the Ban Chiang, Napali and Charoensri are considered the top end hotels these days? Back when I first hit town in 1966, the Udorn and Sri Udorn hotels were new and top of the line. Wonder if these places are still open and reasonably clean? From the pictures, the Silver Reef certainly does look like a great place to stay. Curious name since so far removed from any ocean. Maybe it's a reference to sandbars in Mekong River?

Taking a whizz out the door of a Huey? Must have been some pissed off charlies down there, eh Pop's? :lol:
