Can U Buy Good Furniture Near Udon Thani?

Postby sammyg » April 22, 2009, 8:03 pm

We have looked at the local furniture stores along the highways and the big box stores but haven't found any well built comfortable (not real pricey either!) furniture. The couches we have seen at Big C mall stores you would have to be 9 1/2 ' tall to set back against a cushion of any kind and are cheaply made. The couches along the highway stores are mostly plastic and look like they belong in some Jive Joint in Watts. We would like some comfortable traditional cloth or microfibre couch, end tables and comfortable king size beds?Or do we need to ship them over from USA?Thanks for anyones suggestions of where we might find such!SammyG

Not exactly top of the range stuff but better than most. I recommend Index Living Mall.

There's a furniture place opposite Bo Bay Clothes market (grid T-4 on the map). The shop doesn't look like much when you see it, but they carry some nice sofa sets, dining tables, etc. We picked out a couch and had some minor modifications done to it at no extra cost. I believe they make their own furniture (not on site) and if you don't see something you like you might have something custom ordered.

If you want some traditional wood Thai furniture check out the prison store.

Yep Index, The shop opposite tesco's, I spent quite a lot but even good stuff looks bad after a few years, so you takes your choice a pay up, maybe the cheaper the better then you can replae when it gets tacky.
have fun

Have many places to buy good furniture in Thailand and in Udon Thani. But most of the Expats that live here are on a limited income and can not afford to pay the prices. If you want quality you must pay quality prices, same as back home.

I notice on different websites where they are selling their homes that quite a few folks in Thailand seem to have leather furniture or simulated leather?Does anyone have any experience with that?I would think that it would be cool to the touch but also may make you sweat? Is there a special place to buy leather furniture if that is a good option?Does anyone know of a place that sells used like high end office furniture(there are tons of places like that in the U.S.!)It is very strange in the U.S. to sell a house with the furniture included but seems very common in Thailand? If anyone has any experience is it worthwhile to ship good quality furniture from the U.S. to Thailand when you move here and what are the costs associated with that transaction monetarially? Thanks,SammyG

Sammyg, do be aware a lot of the cheaper furniture made from particle board quickly acquires a smell (often quite strong), :( particularly inside cupboards and drawers, and in the more humid areas gets musty and mildewed, which is very difficult to then get rid of. :( #-o The laminates/veneers can also tend to peel off.

Real wood, whilst a lot more expensive certainly performs/behaves better. ;) :D

With sofas, I've had the vinyl/leather types and find I stick to them, unless you have AC on all the time to keep temperatures down, which isn't really practical. On balance I prefer the material ones, though they can soak up sweat etc and can get smelly or mildewy in more humid areas.

One possibility I like the idea of, is the wooden framed sofas with replaceable cushions. Thus you can change the cushions in the fullness of time if, they become a problem. ;) :D

Thanks arjay for the info. I really like the looks of the prison made furniture its beautiful but I don't think my Big Arse would appreciate it as it has been spoiled over the years from comfortable U.S. couches and lounge chairs.I have seen the cushioned couches and tables and think they would be great for kitchen or dining room set but not so sure about the comfort of setting on a couch for 2 hours watching a movie though!I kind of was wondering about the leather thing and it makes sense although I had heard that leather breathes and oesn't amek you sweat but maybe that is where the temps are 68*F.Thanks,SammyG

In Udon, whilst humidity is high, I haven't had the problems with must and mildew that I had in Phuket. It was a real problem there, with white mildew appearing on book shelves, cupboards etc every few days in the wet season.

I'm currently sitting on a white plastic chair, with a cushion, though that doesn't help/support the back much.

I'm sure leather would be better than vinyl, but one would still have problems "sticking" to it. Leather would also involve a larger financial outlay, in a situation where our futures here are not guaranteed!

I much favour the wooden framed sofas with removable/replaceable cushions, and removable/washable cushion covers. You can also put covers on it, even a large towel. ;)

Rattan with cushions (replaceable/washable etc) could be another option, though they tend to collect the dirt etc.
