Under 21 European Championship

Postby BobHelm » June 27, 2009, 11:59 am

I hadn't realised that the under 21 championship was on in Sweden.
I caught all of the England v Sweden game last night for a place in the finals.
England 3-0 up at half time & cruising and then allowed Sweden to come back & draw the game in the second half. Despite having a man (Campbell) sent off in extra time they came through 5-4 on penalties. First time they have qualified for the final in the competitions 31 years - despite having reached the semis 5 times!!
In the final they will face Germany (who else :D ) who beat Italy 1-0 in the other semi.
England are in for a tough time. Both their strikers are suspended, one of their centre halves & the goalkeeper - although I gather they are appealing the last.
The thing that surprised me were the number of Manchester City players (3, if not 4) who were playing. It looks like they are building some players for the future there as well as buying....

I didn't know about them either but luckily someone in the night market last week did. I was watching tennis from Eastbourne on the projector screen then they changed over to Sweden Vs. Italy. It was a pleasant surprise as I had the shakes and cold sweats for the want of a football fix.

England Vs. Germany in the final... Russian officials? :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

I watched the first half last night and switched over to a movie thinking it was all done and dusted.
Checked back at the end just to make sure and it was 3-3 :yikes:
Extra time then the dreaded penalties but for once we came good. :drunk:
Good luck to them in the final, I fear they will need it.

Not sure who is going to be the ref & assistants for the final Alan.... :D :D :D
They drew 1-1 in the group stages so going to be tight I think.

When we drew with them 1-1 in the Group stages I'm sure it said on Sky Sports that England made 9 changes from the team that had already qualified by winning the first two games.
So all is not lost.....remember Badiel & Skinner ?....Three Lions on a shirt....30 years of hurt.....well,its 43 years now....come on England !

Yes they did zidane because a draw was sufficiant i think so Stuart Pearce could save his strongest squad for the semi final. He must have been sweating, but realy 3 up in the 1st half shouldnt have gone to a shoot out. Now theres 3 top players wont play in the final.

Couldn't watch the match and thought they had a good chance, sick as a parrot this morning. I just hope its not 45 years of hurt next year in South Africa.

Well done England for getting to the final. =D>

Indeed a disappointing result after a good competition by the players.
The loss of the two main strikers & the first choice goalkeeper just too much.
Theo Walcott (who had already admitted he had not had a good tournament) played a lone strikers role - not exactly his forte when on song I would have thought.
As Astana says a good result to have got to the finals for the first time...

Yes to many ball's pumped forward up the middle bob. To me they lacked the pace of the juggernaught. If that was there under 21 side god help us in the future.
