Siam Grand Hotel Udon Thani

Postby lee » June 30, 2009, 7:30 pm

To be, or not to be, that is the question.

Does anyone have any ideas what's happening with this hotel. It looks like construction stopped along time ago. Maybe a victim of the global recession! It's a shame to see so much money spent just to sit there and rot away.

No they were working on it Lee.
About 1 floor went up, then it stopped for quite a while (6 - 9 months I am guessing) but they have now put a couple more floors & seem to be putting a roof on as well now.
I don't go by it that often (maybe 2 times a month) but there always seem to be a few guys working on it & progress made since the last time I went by.
Progress is VERY slow when compared with how Thais normally throw up a building & if the internals take as long as the externals it could be a few years until it opens.... :D :D

I live near there and I pass by nearly everyday. Sometimes I see workers and sometimes I don't. Now I don't even bother to look.

IA,

It's located in grid X-18 (right about the "m" in Amazon Cafe).

Head just past Big C towards the ring road, turn right at the lights (not having gone over the fly over :D ) onto the ring road. A couple of hundred metres or less on the left hand side.

Thanks chaps... I didn't know there was an Amazon there... I like Amazon, nice coffee and lovely staff. There is one on the road from Nong Khai to Udon. I admire the boss as he really hires such cute staff. :D Gawd I hate this country, beam me up Scotty! ImageImageImage

Papaguido probably has the best take on it. I too, pass the site regularly and from a "construction" viewpoint, nothing is happening. I sometimes see people (workers?) milling about or inside one of the levels, I have also seen a small light there at night. I'm thinking that there may be someone in residence, perhaps for security or perhaps just squatters.

Probably construction workers. I've noticed that on many construction sites the workers set up house on the site.

Hmm :-k ? Perhaps the owners should reconsider the hotel aspect?
Redesign it to be studios, or proper one and two bedroom apartments or condos. =D> =D> =D>

I'm not positive, but we drove past the ?Amazon Cafe? a few weeks ago and saw a pile of rubble.

As for the hotel, it's gotta be an amateur job. Construction's been ongoing for a few years, most times we pass by in the past year we see either no one on site or one or two workers. I doubt if the big-name hotels in Udon have anything to worry about.

There has been a lot of activity on this project today. From what I could see - they are pumping concrete up to form the next level, there were at least half a dozen concrete lorries there earlier with others parked on the ring road.

The Udon Chamber of Commerce newspaper (www.udonechamber.com) has an article about the Siam Grand Hotel being built across from Bic C on the ring road. According to the article, it's owned by the Karin Group (of Karin Hotels??), the hotel is 90% complete and is scheduled to open in 2554. The hotel will have 255 rooms, a conference room that can accomodate 2-3000 people and another 7-800. Parking for 1000 vehicles. It's supposedly going to be rated 4 or 5 star.

The article is at

Gee! They must've done a LOT of work on it since I went by it in April. At 90% complete, all the main construction should be finished and they would be putting the finishing touches on it like, paint, flooring, glass in the windows, paving the parking lot, doing landscaping......etc. Maybe, they calculate their percentages different.
