Aaaargh, all the extra Hail Marys said last night for nothing !
Typical when you are down on your luck you concede a last minute goal.
Not quite out yet so time for even more prayers.
Hopefully get the injuries sorted, climb the Premiership and have a good run in the FA Cup.
Just watch us draw either Chelsea,Man U,Arsenal or Man City away in the 3rd or 4th round.
For certain,if we dont qualify for the Champions League next season,Torres will be on his away to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Another poor night for British clubs in the second European competition last night.
Celtic did manage a 0-0 draw away at Hamburg but are bottom of their group after 4 games with only 2 points.
Fulham went down 2-1 away to Roma (having had 2 men sent off) and are 3rd. in their group - 4 points behind leaders Basle.
Everton went down 2-0 home to Benfica. Two bad matches against Benfica (conceding 7 goals while scoring none) have dented their chances of going through. Everton are now 3 points behind their Portuguese rivals.

Liverpool limped sadly out of the Champions League last night despite beating Debrecen 1-0 in Hungary.
Fiorentina beat Lyon 1-0 to qualify for the knockout stage and relegate Liverpool to the Europa League.
Ngog scored in the 4th minute for Liverpool but it was a lacklustre display against the team currently lying 6th in the Hungarian League.
Arsenal beat Standard Liege 2-0 to take an unassailable lead at the top of their group but lost defender
Kieran Gibbs with a metatarsal injury.
Rangers,already eliminated,lost at home to Stuttgart 2-0.

Wonder if winning the new style Europa cup will be enough for Pool??
Do not especially look like a side who will qualify for Europe next season.

Apparently Carragher was saying before the game last night that it wont be a disaster if Liverpool go out of the Champions League and winning the Europa League would be something special.
The thing is,the way they are playing at the moment its very unlikely they would win the Europa League as there are some good sides in it already plus one or two decent sides likely to follow from the Champions League.
There priority has surely to get into the top 4 of the Premiership but they face tough competition from the likes of City,Spurs and Villa.

Last night....Manchester United 0 Besiktas 1......already qualified United lost their 23 home unbeaten run in Europe stretching back to 2005 but they fielded their Carling Cup team.
Porto 0 Chelsea 1.....Chelsea cement their lead at the top of the group.

It was always on the cards the reds would go out I suppose.
The Europa Cup hardly sets the pulse racing.
If we can get Gerrard,Torres,Riera and the rest of the injuries cleared up I can see us making a strong challenge for the top 4 in the Premiership and also a good run in this losers cup if we take it seriously.
But even so the same problems will remain. No money to spend to strengthen the team because of those corrupt Yank cowboys running the club.
Get them out NOW !!

Wolfsburg 1 Manchester United 3......a Michael Owen hat trick secured top spot in their group for United who had 15 players out injured and with Carrick and Fletcher in the centre of defence. Amazing result really,I thought beforehand United were in for a bit of a tonking.

Chelsea 2 Apoel Nicosia 2....poor second half from Chelsea but they had already qualified so,perhaps, understandable.

Group A.
Munich beat Juve away (4-1) to come second in the group & consign Juv to join Pool in the Europa.
Bordeaux secure a 1-0 away win to Maccabi Haifa & stroll through as group winners with 1 draw their only dropped points.
Group B.
United stroll through as winners in a group that never extended them.
Moscow go through in second - will not be the most attractive away leg for some one next up.
Wolfsburg through to Europa, have looked a poor side.
Group C.
Madrid win away at Marseille 3-1, with Ronaldo scoring twice, and also win the group.
An AC Milan away draw gets them second.
Marseille through to Europa.
Group D.
Chelsea and Porto had already made sure of first and second place before last night's games.
Only the Europa spot still to play for.
This went to Atletico Madrid - despite a 3-0 home thrashing by Porto. The Apoel Nicosia draw was not enough for them.
The remaining groups play tonight with most of them already well sorted before the last game is played.
This is certainly NOT true of Group F....
Dynamo Kiev v Barcelona
Inter Milan v Rubin Kazan
Anyone can qualify for anything (or nothing) completely depending on these 2 results.

According to Supersport it WAS enough.
Madrid 3 pts GD -9 Apoel 3 pts GD -3 ...... Apoel scored more goals as well.

I apologize Statto.....in my defense...

Chelsea and Porto had already made sure of first and second place before Tuesday's games.

But third place and Europa League qualification was still up for grabs, and it was taken by Atletico Madrid - despite a disappointing 3-0 home defeat by Porto.

Apoel Nicosia needed to win at Chelsea to have any hope of qualifying, and came away with a 2-2 draw.

Atletico conceded twice in the opening 14 minutes, with Bruno Alves and Falcao on target, before Hulk completed the Spanish side's misery.

I should have looked closer at the table page......
1 Chelsea 6 4 2 0 11 4 7 14
2 FC Porto 6 4 0 2 8 3 5 12
3 Apoel Nicosia 6 0 3 3 4 7 -3 3
4 Atletico Madrid 6 0 3 3 3 12 -9 3
