Car Insurance, Transferable?

Car Insurance, Transferable?

Postby Jello » February 23, 2010, 11:30 am

I understand that in Thailand the car insurance is linked to the car, not the driver. I've seen advertisments for used cars that say "insured until end of year" or similar.

Would the insurance automatically cover the new owner or does the previous owner need to make some type of report to the insurance company?

Car insurance in Thailand is just that, insurance on the car therefore it stays with the vehicle, doesn't matter who drives it .You as the policy holder may build an entitlement to a no claims discount but again if you buy another car you cannot transfer it .However if you p/ex the vehicle most insurance companies will accept a cancellation of the old insurance and credit the balance against the new vehicle insurance , but with no "No claims discount .

So if you drive safely with no claims for ten years, when you buy a new car, you're back into the high-risk bracket?

Perfect Thai logic.

Discounts for safe driving only apply to a single car.

Exactly Tex. I have just lost out on 8 years safe driving in Udon on this . Back to full premiums when the new one is delivered . It does have a benefit side though . Anyone can drive my motor providing they hold a license =; and I don't have to inform the insurance company of extra drivers , nor pay an extra premium .

At least Thailand (as did Panama and Okinawa) offers no-claim discounts. We lived in Texas for 11 years, no tickets, no claims, and never once did our insurance go down. Most years it went up!

My annual auto insurance/registration/road tax for a new 2005 Ford Escape (and a seven-year-old V-Max 1,200 cc motorcycle) in Los Angeles, was less than my annual insurance for a single 2006 Toyota Vigo in Udon Thani, one year later.

Not so much complaining about insurance rates here, as shooting holes in the myths. I also rented a mid sized (new Camry) from LAX for $20 a day in 2006.

A 15-year-old knacked-up beater in Udon will rent for a thousand baht. Be prepared to push it to the gas station as it's loaded with nothing more than fumes.

A proven track-record of accident free driving, in Thailand, is rewarded with ....
Wha??? Come again???

higher premiums for extended no-claim driving

No claims bonus for the driver? Maybe its time for me to explain a little bit about Thai logic .
If you have been driving the same car for five years without accident that doesn't mean you are a good driver, it simply means the car is a very lucky one. So by extension it is logical to apply the discount to the car , not the driver .   That is THAI LOGIC .Who is to say it's wrong . :-"

In my, admitably limited experience, once you have a car it becomes family (and even friends) optional transport. I have watched one vehicle being driven by Dad, son, daughter, cousin, cousin's girlfriend and me all in the space of 2 weeks. If insurance was to a named individual, in case of an accident they would just lie about who was driving!

Obviously, to insure the car makes more sense in Thailand than the person, because you will never know who was driving it..

Trying not to divert OP but can any member advise if Thai Car Insurance companies offer third party property car insurance as compared to comprehensive car insurance which covers both vehicles in a collision. Also what is the annual registration cost for a standard 6 cylinder sedan?.

Yes Tony a variety of different types of car insurance are available.
Fully Comprehensive are sometimes referred to as 1st. Class & costs 15K up
There is also 2nd. class available which I believe is about the equivalent of 3rd. Party (not sure if Fire & Theft are included) I believe it is about 5K.
Up until a few years ago the Government used to insist that all drivers had to display a windscreen sticker showing a very basic level of insurance (I believe the equivalent of 'Road Traffic Act' insurance in the UK) which cost about 1K - If you purchased comprehensive insurance many companies would 'throw this in' with the comprehensive cover.
Personally i would not entertain buying anything except fully comprehensive. It is not only the traffic conditions (although that plays a large part :D ) but also the uncertainty of what is, or is not, covered that would concern me.

I have just paid the annual registration on my Honda City & it was just under 2,000 baht (1,9 something ). From memory it was between 4K & 5K for a large pick up.

Registration Bob? Maybe you mean premium. The registration fee(car tax) on a pickup is 900bht pa. Extra is charged if you have a carryboy or lid cover fitted .

I think the fee went up last year.....I paid 1050 for a 2 door, extended cab Toyota in March 2009. Four door trucks are considerably more.
