Hi all,

I was at the 7th for a while [72, 73, & 74] then I married my “Tea-Lok” and Uncle Sam pulled my security clearance and it was USA here we come. That was when I changed from my red “Cobra 7” baseball cap back to my “Girl scout” headgear. Peacetime stateside duty was a shock after spending years in SE Asia. The nights and days in “the box” were not the greatest but the time off in Thailand was unforgettable. I haven’t been back yet but next time the wife goes I plan on accompanying her. It will be interesting to see how things have changed. I am thinking about the possibility if having a place there when I quit working [as a civilian now of course]. I am not in touch with any of the people I knew there so it was nice stumbling onto your form. I enjoyed reading all of your posts. For “usa” I bet AB9USA brings back some memories at the MARS station.

P.S. is the "Elephant Cage" still there?

I was at 7th RRFS 07/72 - 07/74 as a 98B. Been back to Udon Thani several times since then (94, 99, 2005, 2008). Thai wife and I are planning on retiring there sometime next year.

Drove past Ramasun in 1994 and the cage is gone but you can still see some of it's remains. I was searching the internet a couple of weeks back and found some recent pictures of 7th RRFS. The ops building is in complete ruins. Basically rusted and crumpling down.

I spent most of '74 up until '76 when the start of the close happened. I was walking near B Company office whenI was told I had one hour to pack and get out. I was a 98C. Been a long time. Got sent to DLI so it was not too bad of a trip. Good duty there.

Hay FrazeeDK - I vaguely remember a Charlie Phillips but don’t know what happened to him. I saw where you had tried Vern's ASA Locator [http://www.asalives.org] to find him with no luck. Do any of you remember Mark Mackecney 98C, Chuck Forbes 98C, or Jerry “Tom” Collins 98C? All were at the 7th 72-74. Mark and Chuck both married Thai girls...

I don't recall a Charlie Phillips, but Al Vierstahler maybe. Didn't he run with James McCord, a 98B who gave it up to be a MP at the 7th in '75.

Didn't know there were so many alumni looking at this board. Was there from November 73 to December 74. Best tour I ever had. Real surprise what the Army was actually like when I was sent to Fort Hood after Thailand. Was an 05H on swing shift. Loved the job and loved the women. Lived above the Cobra bar in a room for a couple months then rented a couple different bungalows with a friend of mine (Dave Newcomb). Went thru several pooyings and finally settled on the one that also cost me my clearance and the job. Was at Ft Hood by then and she came to the states on a fiancees visa. No big deal though. Eligible to reenlist so I reenlisted for computer programming school. Probably the second best thing that ever happened to me. First was the wife. Still married to her. Loved the 7th RRFS. Have some photos from that time. May actually get around to uploading them sometime. Scanners are wonderful things. I spent some time scanning in all my photos (well, most anyway) from the 70s and 80s. Thailand, Germany, couple places in the states and Japan. Last visit was month of April 07. Next visit, if I beat the cancer I'm fighting with now, will probably be April 0f 2011. Wife really likes being there during Songkran. Can't quite figure that one out (personally, I don't mind being doused with clean water but not the crap they are out throwing on people) but the trips are really for her more than for me. The Songkran in 2007 got me an ear infection. Anyway, great to know some of you guys are still paying attention to what happens in Udorn?? Udon.

Jim, I remember Dave Newcomb.. I also was on swings for nearly my entire 26 month tour at the 7th.. I worked the AF mission (they gave it up to us Jan 74). Some of the other guys I hung out with primarily at work were Doug Rowe, Bill Lyon, Charlie Phillips, Al Vierstahler, Mike Gauthier, Eddie Huyler, John Soper, Bob Glass, Byron Jordan, Pat Test, Sparky Bruns, Jim Veach, the Stoy brothers, Steve Lippert among others... I still keep in occassional touch with Doug Rowe, Pat Testa, Al Vierstahler, Byron Jordan, and Bob Glass. The world was a huge place back then, it's much smaller now..

Yeah, I don't remember any of those guys. Actually I remember very few names. I hung out with Roger Gregory and Dave most of the time. There were some others but I just can't remember the names. Interestingly, the person I stay most in touch with worked day shift. Never knew him in Thailand. His name is Tom McMahon. I ran into him at Ft Gordon. Was my first assignment out of programming school in 1976. He was there going thru some communications equipment repair course. We kept running into each other over the years as we both stayed in the Army. He lives in Augusta just outside Ft Gordon. Still visit each other sometimes. His wife is also Thai. The Rock and Roll Freak Show was the best assignment ever.

I reckon I know of several dozen 7th RRFS guys that married Thais.. It makes me wonder some times what the total number of ASA types that married Thais was.... You're right on the assignment.. I ended up doing 21 1/2 years in the Army and Swing shift in the box for 26 months was by far the best (and easiest) job I ever had in my career.. Add to that the exotic life of living in Thailand and t'was heaven for a young man..
