currency change "alert"

Postby biscuitz » March 5, 2010, 4:18 pm

hi members, as you know the (£) sterling dropped against the ( $ ) 3.5 cents to the £1, on monday this all happened within 2 hours, & the thai baht is pretty much pegged to the $.. so i changed a large amount of sterling & saved myself losing out on a few 1000 baht, i also alerted my friends in thailand which did the same.. so if there is a major jump or declined with the dollar on sterling & if im aware about the situation i will post it here.... im looking at the currency markets closely, but please bear in mind im not glued to my pc... currently its $1.50 to the £... and remains very unpredictable,

the thai banks were quick to lower the exchange rate against the £ on monday when it dropped against the $ but seem to be dragging their feet to increase the rate even tho the £ has made ground on the euro & the dollar yesturday, as the £ v $ is now at the same level as last week now, at just over $1.51

well id say hold on to ur stering til monday morning, when the thai banks at least catch up with the late fridays trading in the west, as the £ had a nice little serge against the dollar & euro... so really we should be around the 50 baht mark & i would also say wait til after midday before changing... lets just wait & see ( the proof is in the pudding )

That's interesting, does this place always give good rates for £50's ?
Where is this place (in easy to follow "tourist" friendly instructions please) ?
I arrive next month, and always bring my spending cash over in £50 notes, and with the current drop in the value of Sterling I'll need all the help I can get.

Just remember when bringing currency especially 50's that Banks/exchange places do not like any with slight tears, writing on them ie defaced in any way.Spanking new 50's are best :D

Mally, Yes They always give a BETTER Rate than the Banks & Even better if you give them 50's........They have 3 Locations All in the Lumpini Area of Bangkok,Sois 1 & 2 OFF the MAIN Ratchadamri Road, Also in Big C on the Main Ratchadamri Road.......ANOTHER place you should TRY BETTER than the Banks.......Corner of Sukhumvit Road Soi 7 /1 Chinese Travel Agents Go to the side entrance of the shop & it's Just a Money Changer in the Back......You will get PROBABLY the same rates as Super Rich there......But as Pompui says Your Notes Should be New or Nearly New.....No Tears or Writing on them,They will take them but prefer CLEAN Ones.....DON'T Take Scotish 50's though YOU Will get 2 Baht LESS For the Pound for Those !! Anyway BEFORE you change your Dosh,Check the Bank Rates FIRST,I Reckon you get AT Least 50 /60 Satang MORE for EVERY Pound !!! Lets Know..

Sorry Martyn,I Don't know of anything like this exsists in Udon, Only as I said in Bangers,But there ARE A Couple on Walking Street in Pattaya also, Those guys are to my mind quite wealthy Chinese Business men who CAN & Do give you more, then they will hang on to the Foriegn Currency they change and wait for The Thai Baht to DECREASE in Value against them,Then they will cash it all in at Various Banks to make a Nice little Profit........I Think the reason for giving 10 Satang more for the 50's than the other ENGLISH notes is that when they bundle them up in say 5,000 x 50 Notes they are a lot less Bulky to carry to the bank, Rather than say 5,000 x20's or 10's.......Just IMO......
