Is Chang Mai a better place to retire to ?

I think you have some good summaries of the good & bad of Chang Mai already ejwalk.
I would say that out side the city there are some beautiful areas to live as far as flora is concerned. The one other thing that no-one else has mentioned (maybe because they do not agree :D ) is that I find the food served at roadside cafes, Thai take away etc. far more edible there than the equivalent found in Udon. So, for me, I could eat VERY cheaply if I lived in the area.

I would like to re-visit places like Lamphun and Lampang before I turned down the north completely as Udon seems to be headed in a direction that has more farangs, increased pollution and so on. Maybe I will take a look at Nan, Phrae and Phayao in the future, and Khon Kaen, which seem to have less farangs as a possible place for retirement.

The possibilities are endless, with the exception of Pattaya, Phuket, the Muslim south and Bangkok.

Don't rule out Tak either ....... lovely little town :D

I was thinking of the district rather than the city itself statto - where I agree breathing is sometimes enough of a chore :D :D
Last time I was there was January & it is very pleasant there at that time of year, although a little chilly at night up in the hills.
As someone else mentioned, there are some mighty fine Thai restaurants in the city - although maybe a bit 'falangish' price wise if on the main streets. :D
