how to transfer money from Thailand to USA

Post by tony525 » January 13, 2010, 9:18 am

A Thai friend of mine wants to send some money (30,000 baht) from Udon to USA (her brother) via Siam Com. Bank ACH transfer. But when she went to the bank, they told her that this would be almost imposible with the new laws from the Central Bank. They asked her to provide many documents to prove the relationship with the person, why she is sending money, and so other many nonsense questions. Even when she tried Money Gram, the same reactions. May I get some input? Is it really so hard to wire money out of Thailand??

There are several rules for transferring money out of Thailand and SCB are only complying with them.
The following is their policy on International Transfers:

(Quote from SCB)
We are pleased to provide International Fund Transfer service via SCB Easy Net only for the following purposes. For other purposes, please contact any SCB branches.

- Education (for Thai only)
- Family Support (for Thai only)
- Remittance of Savings (for foreigner only)
- Remittance of fund belonging to Thai who is permanent resident aboard (for Thai only)
(End Quote)

I registered for the service and it was easy - just told them I am sending some savings home.

I think the issue is because the person is Thai, and i assume (maybe wrongly) that 'family support' will only be from parent to child or marriage partner, the only way she can transfer money is for educational purposes. If this is not the case, maybe her parents can transfer it? Otherwise if the recipient has an account in Thailand, pay into that and he does transfer himself.

Finally, pay a United States citizen who lives in Thailand the money, and he pays out of his US account. 2 problems, you need trust between the persons transferring money to one another here, and it may be illegal in Thailand.

"and it may be illegal in Thailand".
Aren't most things when It comes to "farangs" in Thailand?

I can see it coming.

New visa extension regulation requires all applicants to bring actual gold bars on extension day(s). Bars must be forge-stamped with identity number which may not change year-on-year.
