old-timer wrote:The Question still remains "what is the advantage of having a yellow book". I have opened a bank account without one, My Thai driving license has my address in Thailand on it, I've never been asked for it ever to buy anything, I have also obtained one year non "O" multiple entry Thai Visas in London and Africa and a single entry visa in Laos without the need of a yellow book.
Sorry, I can't see any reason of having a yellow book, However I do have a passport for my car so I can drive to laos rather than get the bus and taxi. I have found that thing useful.

OT.......... \:D/

I think the point you may be missing is that with the book, the items you mentioned purchased in your wifes name ie car, motorbike etc can be purchased in yours.
Other than that, like you, I see no purpose of it as Imm want to see the house book, banks want to see passport and so on....all achievable without one.

In all of the situations that I faced to establish that I am a resident here and at what address, having the BOOK would have saved me the minor annoyance of having to get a letter from the immigration certifying those facts. By the way, I do not have the BOOK, and the car is in my name but it did require that letter. But now that the immigration is in Udon, the effort to get the letter is much less. The banks of course accept my passport as my ID, and in dual priced attractions, my driver’s license worked.

I think we are all are here under different circumstances. For me, being single and renting, the yellow book is the best advantage I can find for showing immigration. What a breeze now. The problems I have in the past is my landlord is very uncooperative, at times. I always had to ask for copies of his housebook with signatures of him and his wife. Once I was asked to bring him with me to immigration. He could care less what I was asking. I think he said something like this, "If you don't like it, move out."

Therefore I obtained a yellow book and since have bought a car without having to go to immigration to get a paper from them which AGAIN requires signed and dated papers from my landlord. The book is absolutely free, except for a paper from a translation service to translate my passport to all Thai.

The other advantages I have seen have been mentioned in earlier posts.

I think the yellow book for foreigner it's good to have but if you want to buy car or motorbike even you have the yellow book you still need to go to immigration for approve address anyway.

Not always true, perhaps it may depend on where you go. A friend of mine recently bought a motobike using his yellow book, proof of residence from immigration wasn't required.

What good is a "Yellow Book"? When I extended my O-A Visa this week, the Immigration Police requested to see my Yellow Book. Went home, retrieved it, returned to Immigration Police and got an extension. One man's recent experience.

Okay can anyone tell me if the yellow house book can be used as a substitute for a witness in applying for a marriage visa in Udon, as we dont have a "head man" on our estate.

Doubt it. Last I heard a witness could be a neighbor or someone that is known to you & your wife.

Are the folks at immigration telling you it has to be the village headman?

I got my visa as a married man at the airport last year, i had all the required documents and the yellow book. the wife came with me and she also dragged along her mother and brother just in case. immigration did not ask them any questions.from what little i know of the subject it is the single man who must find a thai person to come with him to act as a guarantour that the applicant is a fit person to live in thailand.

No mention of having to have head man as my guarantor, just read from translated copy (googled) given to my wife by immigration of requirements, which is not always reliable. Can you take any person we know or does it have to be a neighbour?
