Another neophyte

Postby aussiepom » June 12, 2010, 11:28 am

Hello all, sambai dee baw!

I have just joined the board. I am building (well. my local friends are building, I am paying for) a house in Ban Lao which is now nearing completion and will be finished when I get there in mid-July. I have visited the LOS including UT quite a bit, but never for more than 3-4 weeks at a time.

Now that I've retired (mostly) I will be spending more time in Ban Lao and UT with my friends, although I'll continue to call Australia home for now. I'll arrive in Mid July for a 3 month stay.

This is just to say hello really, and to say how glad I am that this board exists, a useful networking tool. It has already proved its worth in recent weeks as a source of more reliable background info about the "troubles".

Although I am an Australian, I started life as a Englishman and speak tolerable German and French, and so hope to evade the more obvious stereotyping both by me and others. I have a genuine affection for the Thai culture and am naturally moderate in my behaviour, this makes me able to hold both my liquor and my tongue. I've spent enough time in the usual fleshpots to be well over them, and have seen enough farangs of my age (and younger) behaving like spoiled simpletons not to want that going on around me.

Having said that, it's obvious from the posts here that there are some like-minded people in UT, and I look forward to meeting some of you later, perhaps I can shout you a drink (that's Ozspeak)
:D

Welcome "aussiepom" Look forward to meeting you sometime whilst your here. Always good to have a "level headed" expat around (there arn't that many of us!!)
I think you need to change your intro though ........

Although I am an Australian, I started life as a Englishman

should have read .............

Although born and bred in England, I have managed to endure many years living in OZ.

Welcome to the forum aussipom.

Wow, you speak English, German, French AND Australian! Very impressive. From your greeting I see you speak a little Isaan as well. Looks like you're off to a good start.

Thanks for your correction, statto. The only problem with putting your eminently sagacious revision into effect is that it would oblige me to abandon my position (that comes further down, have a look) on "evading the more obvious stereotyping"

Look forward to editing a beer with you :D

OMG!

A "Neophyte" - is that another sexual minority group being attracted to Udon? :D

By the look of your avatar you must have come from that part of the UK known as Little Britain before you saw the light and headed for the Antipodes.

Welcome aboard the forum, and ignore the likes of statto - he is just bitter and twisted from being too young to get a free passage to New Holland, and too old to get a 10 pound ticket.

That's how old you have to be before you can admit to have been born a Pom and raised as an Aussie :D

Proud to be an Aussie and a Pom too - comes in handy for the Ashes. Speaking of sport, I'd like to see the Germans try to beat us at AFL - or rugby come to that. (Don't mention the 1966 Soccer World Cup - I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it....)

And to my German friends - das war nur Spass und ganz freundlich gemeint :D :D :-" :-#

I can own up to having to look in the dictionary for 'neophyte' ! A kind of relief actually, as I thought it might be to do with Nazi punch-ups. :? ;)
