Being a non-regular visitor of the Book House I cannot judge about the volume-level of the music there.
What I do know is that Thai people like (?) loud music. I do not. Especially when I want to talk with some friends, loud music can be very irritating indeed. I don't want to be a whiner, so I just seek a bar which is more quiet.
Do bar-owners know what their customers like concerning to music? Do the ever ask them?
Personally I can imagine very well that people would like to have some music when they enjoying themselves in a bar. If I was a bar-owner, I would make a careful selection of the music I would play. In a lot of bars they play music which is not background music at all. It is the penetrating, pushy character of a lot of voices of the artists which makes it irritating, not only the volume.
