ok, i hate to leave anything incomplete or not detailed, so to bore you with todays banking/atm experience.

just before leaving house at approx 3 pm, checked a few source, with one exception, all agreeing.
UM home page rate listing USD/THB.....32.4....that would be nice
UT home page rate listing.................32.3751
my yahoo finance...........................32.37
forex type website..........................32.3751

rate given at AEON prosi branch...........32.26196

so all of 11-12 satang exchange rate charge, on 16000 baht/495.94 USD, ttl 'fee' due to exchange rate, less than 60 baht, and if not mistaken, a better rate than all those charging the 150 baht foreign atm usaage fee. if not, PLEASE let us know.

last 30 days, 10 transactions, no fees, all 16000 baht, high of 496.53 usd/32.223 (june 23rd), and a low of 492.87 usd/32.4629 (june 14th) i use fidelity investments brokerage/visa debit card for all transaction.

no other bank on the link below has a better rate, and all charge that 150 fee.

anyone got something better, please let us know.

I use USBC No known fee, so you LA are getting a much better rate. So I am totally confused where the exchange takes place. I just know that before this 150 fee thing started, my HSBC statement gave the exchange rate and it was like yours, close to the going rate. Now after the rate on the statement is all zeros. Dam banks.

Well, for us brits, lets see what i got last month:

7th june - 46.81
8th june - 46.59
9th june - 46.39
10th june - 46.74
11th june - 46.91
19th june - 47.38
22nd june - 47.24
28th june - 47.80

these rates were typically about 0.5 baht below the BBC international exchange rates (bar one which was about 1 baht, probably rate for day done at bad time). This is to be expected because there is a 1% levy for the exchange by my bank in UK. Some done 150 baht fee terminals, some Aeon, no difference.
i am sure the exchange rate is set by my UK bank - they set it when the transaction gets to them. The Thai bank gets some of the 1% fee. if not paying 150 baht at the ATM, this is as cheap as changing cash or travellers cheques (about).

There is only one bank in UK that is open about these rates, i believe, - Nationwide. it tells me each time how many baht i took out (including 150 baht if charged), the exchange rate and how much in pounds sterling. Other banks are less open because there can be up to 3 fees applied to your transaction, apart from the 150 baht!

OK gentlemen, at the bottom is a link I use that shows all Thai bank current exchange rates. Most banks keep these up to date I've found.
On another note, I did a 15,000B withdrawal Sun. ($470.xx). This AM I went to my banks (Bank of the West, CA.) online banking site and they had the 150B Thai ATM charge, $4.70 for BofW charge (foreign service fee) and $4.70 for Mastercard charge. My debit/ATM card has a MC logo on it and this is something new. Now that the govt (US) has cracked down on the credit card industry they have found other ways to screw people.
LP, If you had read the posts all the way through from the beginning other than the original post and then posted YOUR comments and read Arjays post and then my reply to him you'd have seen why my original posting was double. It had NOTHING to do with my editing but was the result a website glitch.

Well gentlemen, on the 26th I went into Siam Commercial at Big C, went inside and withdrew 20,000B on my debit card. Instead of the 150B ATM charge, on checking my online account activity I got charged $4.50 foreign service charge and the usual 1% to my U.S. bank and 1% to MasterCard so it's a push for me. The only difference is I might have got a little better exchange rate but not the posted $50-100 (at the time 32.89B=$1) one but the lower one $1-5 or about 32.24B=$1 as near as I can figure.

ATM exchange rates

Postby semperfiguy » June 22, 2011, 9:41 pm

I can't remember where the most recent thread is with discussions of the pros and cons of using the AEON ATM's, so I will just post here. I checked the ATM rates online today and saw that the USD to Baht rate was falling fast...most Udon banks were at 30.35. I hurried down to the UD Tesco AEON ATM and actually wound up getting 30.46 on the exchange with no ATM fee. You gotta' love 'em!

ATM exchange rates

Postby douglas » June 23, 2011, 4:24 pm

Hi,
Was near Tescos, at the cross roads to N.K. this morning. I went in by entrance opp. the tyre place. The first four ATM's no AEON there. went down to the ATM's near the record shop, Bingo, one there. It looked new. Tall, must have be about 7 foot. plus a mach. by its side, from AEON. Inserted my card. after pumping in my number and selecting English, all going well, the old bugger thought. Asked me how much i wanted. The machine only quoted 1k to 7K. i wanted 10K so selected others. I then put in 10,000B, wrong, You have to pump in how many thousands you want, i.e 10 for 10,000B. O.K. new system to me, touched my forelock and obeyed. This is when things went haywire, everything else came up in Thai. There were two choices, so I thought odds 50/50 and pressed one. another page came up, in Thai, with another two choices, odds getting worse, so pressed one, mach. went into overdrive and i had to press cancel. I thought better to pay 150 B and go to a ATM that is user friendly. Which i did. Girl in record shop spoke to me and said a lot of farangs have trouble with that machine, her words. I replied i'm not surprised. So unable to complete my mission. Will try next week.
Wither it is because the machine can take deposits as well as paying out, other banks have seperate machines, or just me, i don't know. Will take wife with me next week. I think she can read Thai..
I have been coming to LOS since 1970 and lived here since 2005. This is the first time i have been unable to use a ATM. If anyone knows what i have done wrong. Could you let me know please. Put a old man out of his pain.

Douglas, I've never tried to use that particular machine, but UD Tesco is your best bet if it's not too far off your beaten path. They have a full blown retail office there with 2 machines. If you run into trouble the staff are always there to help and verify your problem. If you use a machine that is unattended, then you will run the risk of thieves lurking nearby to pick up on your PIN number and card readers and cameras being attached to the machine by thieves to steal your info. Probably wouldn't be such a problem in a big store like Tesco where you went, but stay completely away from those stand- alone machines on the side of the road.

ATM exchange rates

Postby douglas » June 25, 2011, 12:44 pm

Hi,
Thank you very much for that info. semperfiguy. Will try that next Thursday. Got to go down to the pet shops near there. Kill two birds with one stone. I must say that one in Tescos is the most unfriendly user machine i have ever tried.
Cheers Doug.

I am sure everyone knows this but just for the record, there are 2 AEON atm machines at Tesco UD Town.
