Possible disruption at UK airports - BAA strike action

A million passengers to endure summer of misery as six UK airports face being paralysed by strikes

The loss of firefighters, security staff and engineers would effectively force BAA to close Heathrow, Stansted, Glasgow, Southampton, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

More than 350,000 people travel through their terminals every day in August. Already this year passengers have suffered huge disruption through strikes at BA and the volcanic ash crisis.

Unite representatives will meet on Monday to discuss strike dates, knowing they must give at least a week’s notice before any action. That means the earliest date they could strike would be Monday, August 23 – the start of the week leading up to the bank holiday.

Wouldn't it be easier to post dates when UK airlines weren't striking?

Same for French railways.

And Italian garbage collectors.

It's not UK airlines who are striking. It's the British Airports Authority, (BAA) who run all the ground staff and support services. Thus if the strikes come to pass they could close UK airports, affecting all airlines flights into and out of the UK, including French, Italian, Thai and American ones.

Airports strike threat lifted after new pay offer

The threat of a strike by staff at six UK airports this month has been lifted after a new pay offer was tabled.

The Unite union and the airports' operator BAA agreed a "basis for settlement" following a day of talks.

A strike was threatened at Heathrow, Stansted, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton after engineers and other ground staff rejected a pay deal.

Agreement to end the strike threat came after nine hours of talks, but no details of the new offer were released.

That will be a relief to a number of forum members.
