Bicycle Rack

Hello.

Does anyone know where I can get a bike rack for the back of a car please (preferably In or around Udon).

Yesterday we found a bike shop, well equiped. North of Makro there is a big Goodyear tire sign,turn left at the little soi and go back some distance. You can't miss the bike shop on the right, many bikes on display and I noted he had a bike rack for cars but didn't note if it was for trunk mount or other. They have the best selection of bikes, frames and accessories I have found yet in Udon.

I've been looking for ages for a bike rack to go on the back of my pickup, can't find one anywhere, have googles til crossed eyed. All I can find is a clamp arranegment thing that goes in the bed, but having a 4 door pickup the bed isn't long enough for the bikes to stand in without having the tailgate down. Anyone seen a rack for a pickup tailgate?.

Hi Chriss, have you not considered designing one that suits your needs and getting a company in Udon to manufacture it for you? These fabricating companies here are really very good with steelwork...could be a business opportunity for you as so many 4 door pick-ups and even if a small percentage of them require the same thing.....£££'s

Yes, a friend of the wife has a small metalworking company, he's done a lot of work for us and I've always been impressed, I've asked him if he can come up with an idea, just waiting for him to finish a roofing job on a new factory. Guess his business comes first.

I'd ask Doc, the guy who makes those fine steel plate barbecues.
He might know where you can get a bike rack made for a pickup.

Alluminium is the norm for bicycle racks in Europe, e.g. Thule, Fiamma. Omnistor etc and is more than adequate for the job. Look at www.fiamma.com for some ideas, I know the company well from my past working life in the UK, they were leaders in the field in the industry I was involved in. Hope it helps you or at least provides some inspiration.

Looking for something like this? It fits in the square receiver type trailer hitch. The photo isn't very good but, you can Google shopping for it and see if you can find a better pic you can show your wife's friend.

Not me no. I want something to fit on the tailgate so I can still open and close the tailgate, without the bikes on it of course.

will your bike go into the back of the truck if you take off the front wheel ? if it does try coming up with a frame that has a bike quick release axle on it . you take off the wheel and clamp the fork in the axle.you would need some sort of binding to keep the back of the bike steady. in the u.k. bike on a rear rack must have an illuminated duplicate of the car registration plate fastened to it as the rack and bike hides the plate.

You could have a rack welded here for a fraction of what you'd pay in the US. Before I'd want my entire bike hanging off the end of my truck, I'd opt for the front wheel over the back. A Thai friend of mine has a makeshift rack in his short-bed Isuzu. It's a stainless steel bar that goes across the bed, nearest to the window. He removes the front wheel, clamps the fork onto the bar, and tosses the front wheel in the back of the bed. Works for him.

Just tried hanging the front wheel over the tailgate and it works a treat, the bike didn't move too much driving round the streets, the back tyre kind of stuck in the groove in the bed liner.. Think I need to get the thinking/design cap on with the aid of that website.....

In Canada I took a sheet of plywood cut to the size of the bed, on that I mounted a couple cheap quick release hubs. Pop off the front wheel and lock the fork in, similar to what was mentioned above. Just like motorcycles once the front is locked the back doesn't really go anywhere. If your concerned you can cut a short section of plastic pipe lengthwise and make "holders' for the back wheel. If you need to haul something else you can just slide your plywood out.
You can fiddle with quick release hubs like I did, or they make a mount specially for trucks. It's a square piece of steel with a quick release and mounting tabs. They were 20 bucks each back home.
