They don't. They're usually rented properties.
The term "buying a bar" here means literally that -- buying the bar, the fridges, the stereo the tables and chairs.
The building itself is generally not for sale.
Which makes me question how much a collection of such used silverware and glasses and barstools is worth ...

100,000?
200,000?

Dunno.

I've never heard the term "buying a bar" used to mean only buying the furnishings until I came here. Wondering if that term is used elsewhere -- or is unique to Thailand. Would you say you were "buying a house" when you were really buying the furniture and renting the structure? Sounds odd to me. Just wondering. I only know one guy who has bought his bar.

You're also buying the goodwill and the hordes of customers that fill the place every night.

I've heard that line before.
I don't buy it. Goodwill? From whom? The ice delivery boy?
There is nothing that says a patron will remain loyal to an old bar under new management. Most bars would be thrilled with a trickle of customers. How do they value the customer base? Why not charge extra for potential?
What is the value of even the "name" and reputation of a bar if the new manager (not an owner, is he?) wants to slap on a fresh coat of paint and maybe change the name of the bar ... ziltch. You can't sell somebody your reputation.

No, the bar ware is what's actually being sold. The rest is magic beans with the promise of ... well, nothing.

The top flight surely bungs off to the big city. The second tier hangs on harvesting fields and pushing out progeny... Not as dear and not as sweet, but usually available.
A caravan full of Cobra Gold strapping boys wipes out the pool for damn near a month.
Sad indeed. Better money and quality flesh. Hard to blame the peddlers.
Whining only make you look more pathetic.

 PLEASE behave! We're trying to live in a state of denial here! :badteeth:

Don't know how "panick" did it, but I have it copied and saved on my computer.

I don't normally bother using it as I can't get it into the fonts I normally use in "Word" - the only version I have is in "Angsana New" font which will, however, copy onto forum boards but being lazy I find it much easier just to type THB or Baht.

Copied from my computer:
฿

I would be interested in an easier way.

Not sure how Panic did it. Using an English/Thai keyboard, switch to Thai language (language bar), press and hold SHIFT key and press the 7 key (฿).
