This will not be an issue for you in Thailand. Toilet paper here is found everywhere except the toilet. You will, however, have to learn the art of directional water splashing.

You will also have to decide what to do with your trousers/shorts/pants during this process. If you leave them around your ankles (or knees) you risk them being filled with "mis-directed" water. Or if you remove them for the duration, invariably you will find that there are no hooks, nails or other suitable places to hang your clothing, to keep it off the ground.

As you can see life as a retiree in Thailand can be challenging. ;)

It helps to keep your sanity if you are naturally bone idle. :D

If its not too personal and prying could I ask the "old hands" who have been retired in LOS for some time:

1. At what age did you retire to LOS?
2. How long have you been there?
3. If you liquidated all assets - how much do you need (to invest) to retire in LOS (I know a difficult question - just a ball park estimate)?
4. Do you plan to end your days in LOS?

ronan:

1. 56
2. 3+ years
3. Current ballpark yearly (comfortable) living costs (after purchase of house & vehicle) about TBH350 - 400,000. Add overseas travel, unexpected medical (if you cannot get back to the bosom of Medicare in Oz :D ).
4. Yes

Of course, things may change, depending on global warming. :D

1) 58
2) 13+ yrs.
3)Sold and divided houses ,furnishings and cars amongst grandchildren!Everything is bought and paid for here, have accumulated alot of ''stuff'',no medical here, pay rent, bought land for wifes ''security feelings'',no house building, spend about 60K a month family expense included(could get by on 40K easy),have cash savings in Thailand and out!
4)At the moment ,that is my plan!

Although the daughter will be off to University next month, expect monthly expenses to escalate greatly!

Plan on buying medical insurance for wife and daughter, possibly some accident insurance on myself!

Hahaha - Thanks Bamakmak :D

Thanks Nkstan also.

I'm 54 next year, waiting till at least 55 when I can access my Super (can draw down 10%, but pay some tax on that) - but the numbers you give make it feasible on that amount - and still leave primary property in Oz to rent.

I have a good job and pay and want to make use of next few years to build up nest egg - but I'm coming to LOS soon - sick of work, getting harder every day.

1. At what age did you retire to LOS? 46
2. How long have you been there? 14
3. If you liquidated all assets - how much do you need (to invest) to retire in LOS (I know a difficult question - just a ball park estimate)? 2 million minimum for house/furnishings if you buy. Add another half-one million for a vehicle/insurance. Add another 800k baht for your retirement visa (not necessary but it'll make getting your annual renewal that much easier). If you don't have health insurance, I'd add another mil for medical emergencies (money here or elsewhere).
4. Do you plan to end your days in LOS? I've reserved my airspace over the mountains of KhaoKou for my ashes.

For peace of mind, I'd plan everything at 25baht to the dollar. If it stays where it's at today (31/1) it's gravy. If it continues to drop, you're covered.

If you're coming over with a backpack, disregard all the above.

Chess is extremely good for the brain. And here's why: http://www.chessology.com/articles/100- ... -chess.php

Please feel free to come and join the Udon Chess Club on Saturdays at 3pm in the Bookhouse & Coffee Shop.

We now have two grandmasters in the house, both of whom you can learn lots from very quickly!

50.
Two years.

Have two houses in Udon, two cars, and motorbike all paid for with cash.
A brand new apartment in Cornwall, paid for, no morgage.
60,000 a month income, 90,000 if the Cornwall apartment is rented.
400,000 in a Thai bank for the spouse visa.

The thought of living in the UK gives me nightmares.
Went to see my Mum earlier this year, could not wait to get out.
Not the England I knew as a kid. I felt like a foreigner.

1. At what age did you retire to LOS? 68
2. How long have you been there? two years
3. If you liquidated all assets - how much do you need (to invest) to retire in LOS (I know a difficult question - just a ball park estimate)? My wife, child and I get on very nicely on about 50K baht per month. That includes a 15K monthly car payment. Could get by on less if we had to.
4. Do you plan to end your days in LOS? Yes, political situation permitting. If not, it's off to Central America, but remote chance of that happening.
