I know that Udon has a plan to try and attract some more international flights that will lead to an increase in tourism. Flights also lead to a higher end market.
There is also a plan to partner Udon (Ban Chiang) with Luang Prabang and a UNESCO world heritage site in Vietnam. They want to market it as a world heritage triangle. Bangkok Air has been quite successful in marketing itself as serving world heritage sites. I believe there is a trend around the world in marketing and pairing up UNESCO sites as more touristic attractions. This "world heritage triangle" will also lead to more high end tourists as they will probably be package tourists flying between the locations.
I believe that the international tourism is growing in Udon largely due to the farang that are living here. For a variety of reasons including people visiting friends living here as well as all the tourist services that have developed for the residential farang here. I think the growth in residential farang is around 30% a year.
Someone was mentioning that as more and more tourists are coming here a higher percentage are undesirables. It has been noted many times on this forum that there has been a decline in the quality of farang coming to Udon. Talking to many locals they have also noted this in the past few years.
