lee wrote:Hi Guys, thanks for the heads-up regarding the IE8 issue. I'm pleased to say that as of yesterday evening the front page is now fixed. After doing a little digging around I noticed there was a bug with the flv player script. Most browsers have the ability to ignore minor errors and make adjustments to display the page correctly, therefore users using Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc would not have noticed any problems. However IE8 is hyper sensitive and will normally freeze when there is a slight error in the code.

The code is now fixed and everything seems to be working OK. :D Does anyone know how long there has been a problem? I don't use IE so I was not aware of any problems until I picked this thread up yesterday.

I first noticed the problem Wednesday 0500 GMT, I was back to normal Thursday 1300 GMT.

small notice came up on the front page clicked it and the page collapsed but got onto the site via favourites history.

13% of the last 500 visitors to udonmap are using IE6  Looking at the stats for the past 500 visitors 56% are using IE browsers, 37% Firefox, 5 % Safari and 2% others. Last year it looked like Firefox was gaining ground over IE, now it looks like the other way around. However going by global stats looks like IE is loosing popularity. http://gs.statcounter.com/

They REALLY should be looking for something else, especially now..
The desired demise of IE6 came a step closer when just a few weeks ago Google announced that from 1 March, it will end support for the browser.

The world's most powerful internet company said that from next Monday some of its services, such as Google Docs, would not work "properly" with the browser.

YouTube has pencilled in 13 March for when it will drop IE6.

Stop using Internet Explorer ??

Postby semperfiguy » September 23, 2011, 5:31 pm

I have been having trouble for months with slower speeds downloading/uploading, even though I have been steadily increasing the Mbps through my cable company. I use Hotmail for email, and it has become a nightmare to upload to their server and type emails. My computer started displaying the wrong icons for websites that I had stored as favorites, plus many more problems for which I could not find a solution.

Yesterday I switched over from Internet Explorer browser to the Google Chrome browser, and it is an absolute world of difference. Took me a few hours to figure out the new system, but well worth the effort. The speeds are lighting fast now and the technology is actually more user friendly than IE with many additional benefits. All of my problems went away and now it's a real treat to jump onto my computer in the mornings. I highly recommend the switch.

And for a safer Chrome experience, try Comodo Dragon - it's Chrome, with a few security enhancements, but runs all the standard Chrome extensions.

Explorer by itself wouldn't give you these problems.
One possibility is a virus - install AVG free edition. It is as good as anything out there.
Second is that you have a load of crapware loading at start. Use the control panel to remove any programs you don't use.
Third is that you have a faulty RAM. This can give rise to very erratic problems that affect some programs but not others and not all the time. Memtest86 is the standard program for testing RAM, often installed and an option from the boot menu. Free to install.

kumphawapi, I appreciate the response, but I'm a little confused now. If I was having all the problems before, and by using Google Chrome all the problems went away, why should I then suspect that I am having the other troubles that you suggested? I'm not much of a computer whiz so I'm a little reluctant to download free software that I know absolutely nothing about. Tried to read up on Memtest86, but too complicated for me. I am already using Norton 360 Security and have been for the past two years. In Norton's Start Up Manager I see 22 programs and I'm sure that most of them are necessary, but several of them I do not recognize and don't have a clue what they do. I'm sure this is one reason why it takes so long to boot up. I tried to cut and paste them here but it won't let me do that. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll keep using Chrome and hope that none of the problems come back.

Stop using Internet Explorer ??

Postby parrot » September 24, 2011, 8:52 pm

I don't have Norton Start Up manager, so it may not be fair to compare.....but I use Starter (a free program) to see what's part of my bootup....I show avast and a google update as the only programs that run on my 50 second bootup. I've run Starter on a variety of Thai-owned computers and often see 15 or so programs that run on bootup........I can't imagine why??

Stop using Internet Explorer ??

Postby jimboLV » September 25, 2011, 7:57 am

Some time ago, acting on a tip from a computer guru at work, I went through my startup list and googled every program on it. If you do this you will find all kinds of write ups on various forums telling what it does and whether you really need it and whether it can safely be removed. Not only did my startup time decrease but the comp ran noticeably faster.

Parrot, google update is a notorious waste of resources. The problem is that it runs constantly looking for updates, consuming your computer's resources.

Stop using Internet Explorer ??

I hate to muddy the waters, but, over the years, I have fixed many friends' computers by COMPLETELY getting rid of anything Norton on their systems. Norton is a huge resource hog, and gets its tendrils tangled up in most everything. It's so bad that you need to download a special program, and follow a special procedure to fully remove it.

These days, with Avast, Comodo, and any number of highly effective FREE solutions out there, there's no reason to run the dinosaur that is Norton.

Microsoft Security Essentials, also free, is excellent too.

Just my 0.02.

"google update is a notorious waste of resources. The problem is that it runs constantly looking for updates, consuming your computer's resources."

I've been thinking about taking it off my 'starter' list......as long as I'm under a minute for bootup I'm a happy camper. But thanks for the suggestion.

I had some bad experiences with Norton years ago......and agree with Sateev about Avast (been using it for years) and microsoft security essentials. As I understand it, Norton 360 isn't a free program. If you got a copy here with your computer, it's probably bootleg....and I wouldn't use a bootleg copy of a security program on my computer. Even if it's a legit copy, it's still Norton.

Two years ago I was a Comcast Cable/High Speed Internet customer back in Tennessee and the Norton Security was a free download benefit. Nearly one year from the date that I moved to Udon I got a notice to upload an update from Norton. I thought nothing of it, so I clicked on the update and that's when it started searching my computer and discovered that I was no longer a Comcast subscriber. Rather than give me a grace period to arrange a renewal of Norton's service, it just completely shut off and left me with no security and an option to renew online. It was fairly late at night and I panicked thinking that if I didn't resolve the issue immediately my computer would be vulnerable to attack. I signed back up online right away for $43 for one year and I can use the license for up to three computers, so I also went ahead and activated it on my other laptop.

Since as long as I can remember the name Norton has been synonymous with computer security and was even used on the systems where I used to work...the largest cemetery/funeral home owners in the world. I'm happy to know that there are some free downloads out there, and next year I will probably go to one. But in the meantime, why is there any reason for me to be concerned about having Norton 360 on my computer?

"why is there any reason for me to be concerned about having Norton 360 on my computer?"

If it's a legit copy and it updates itself regularly, there's probably no reason to be concerned.
