1 less direct carrier LHR to BKK

I don't know if someone else has already reported this. If they have, sorry it must have slipped by my radar.

When I first started coming to Thailand the direct flight choice from London used to be limited to 3 carriers.
Thai Airways
EVA
Quantas/BA

Then, a little while ago from memory, BA opted out of their partnership deal & the 3rd, choice became Quantas only.
I now read that Quantas are finishing the Bangkok to London route in March this year.

They have also just cut a few other long haul routes because of falling half year profits, but the London decision was made prior to that anyway.

I only took the flight once with them & was disappointed enough not to want to repeat the experience, but I am sorry that they are finishing as more choice is always better than less.

Less choice and increased prices on the way I think.
The Airbus, Thai are now using on the Bangkok-Heathrow has less seats, but 20% more fuel effcient than the ancient 747's.
A lot less British are booking long haul holidays to Thailand, due to the Depression.

We once flew the ill fated Phuket Airways from Gatwick on a 747 that looked like the one parked up at Udon

I agree Prenders, I used that airline once (I had read that a percentage of the takings would go towards helping out the tsunami victims/families). The plane was falling apart, when I was asked by a flight attendant to secure my seat belt for take-off I showed her that half the belt was missing, so she said she would find me another seat... but didn't. On the return flight to London, the plane had more problems and we landed at Schiphol airport in Holland... only to be grounded, leaving over a hundred passengers to make our own way back to Blighty. We all chipped in and chartered a flight back.

Don't think the OP's information is correct.
You can book direct flights with BA, Eva, Quantas, and Thai in summer 2012
prices with BA are particularly good for direct flights at the moment, especially for a single ticket Bangkok to London

You may well be able to currently book a Qantas flight between BKK & LHR for summer 2012, the one thing that looks certain is that you will not be travelling on a Qantas plane though!!
This was published by Qantas & BA in August 2011, concerning their long standing Joint Service Agreement between the companies over Far East/Australian to London routes.

The restructuring will also see the two carriers concentrate on operating JSA services from their respective hubs - BA will stop operating flight sectors between Bangkok and Sydney from early 2012, while Qantas will no longer operate sectors between London and Bangkok/Hong Kong. The move will also see BA increase the frequency of its London-Hong Kong service to 17 per week (from 14).

From this piece, in the Bangkok Post it appears that BA are going to take over the running of a London - Bangkok route. Although some of the wording in the piece is rather confusing - mention of improved facilities at Gatwick, for example...

About 6 weeks back, one of my sons and his fiancee travelled from London to Sydney, breaking the journey in Thailand to say hello to me for a few days. I'm aware that they booked with Qantas, but travelled on BA planes. They actually got a excellent price.
