Don't know about offshore but another option that might interest you is the Merchant Navy. Check out www.seafarers.org it's Seafarer's International Union web site. They have a program for vets to join the union and get a job on one of their contracted ships. Will involve sometime at the Union school at Piney Point Maryland.

You will have to get your CV out there and promote yourself, and subscribe to some oil and gas specific employment websites. They will provide tips on how to produce a CV , and allow you to search for what suits your skills.

Try as a start

If you do not have any oilfield experience then it would be very difficult to get hired. Generally offshore they are looking for experienced hands for senior position and they hire locals for the lower position. You may want to try and see if you can get something in Iraq first to build up some experience.

Unless you can qualify as an "Expert" in ANY field you will not get the 'Work Permit' to work in Thailand even in their offshore waters. If you do qualify THEN you can start applying for positions.

I don't know about the current situation but when I worked offshore here JST (John Stamp) http://www.smithflowcontrol.com/thailand-jst.html supplied expat labor to Chevron for their Thai operations.

We have a Thai friend who works offshore for Chevron, he tells us there are no more expats employed by Chevron in Thailand, all staff are local hire.

Not exactly true; Chevron Thailand still has a lot of expat management and consultants although as a percentage of total workforce, they are much in the minority. Also, Chevron is a mature operator in Thailand so there isn't demand for exploration expertise and the existing production and maintenance can be done by trained locals.

Back to the OP; as an American getting a start in the oil and gas business, look at the gas shale plays onshore in your own country. It is booming and you don't have to worry about visa and work permits... just the taxes! Offshore Gulf of Mexico is also very active but not having specifically marine or offshore experience may limit the market. Either way, work 2-4 years domestically and quick to acquire skills and do additional training, you could get lucky in Africa or Mid East. Then you could do the 28/28 day rotation and live in LOS as many oilfield people do. From personal experience, working in Thailand in E&P isn't all that IMHO.

With an ex- military background, there's a better chance of getting hired into the security side of of the oil and gas business. There's a gradual draw down on these in the obvious markets of Afghanistan and Iraq but opportunities exist in 'frontier' exploration areas such as Kurdistan and some of the central Asian republics (formerly soviet). Marine security, provided to vessel owners by contractors, is quite a busy market, especially offshore East Africa and Somalia where pirates are a big issue.

my boy is ex military, and now he is Police Bomb Squad, but not here in Thailand..
There are other avenues besides oil rigs for ex military men, one is working as security in S.E Asia
I had a go at training local forest rangers in Cambodia's Cardamon Mountains where the World Wildlife Foundation, Wildlife Alliance, and other organisations, are assisting the local government with species protection, and the stopping of illegal logging in National Parks there..There is also a number UN security jobs going in the wider region, from being minders of UN voting observers in places like Nepal, to being a US Embassy guard in Malaysia. If you have done abit of military service, can handle yourself, maybe no abit about weapons, or can led, train and organize a squad of others, even if park rangers, then search around the web...use your skills and your knowledge, if you want to stay handy to Siam..

Not true, i see new expats all the time here in the GOT but its about 90-95% thai

To get an expat position must have the experience from home country, even if its just a few years, more and more rigs getting built and they are looking for less experience but these jobs are in West Africa or Middle East. Fook that unless its huge money haha

Have you thought about getting shutdowns in Western Australia onshore & offshore? You can pick up really good money, make contacts and get some experience.

A friend of mine worked casually for Transfield-Worley and now Monodelphus on a Woodside gas plant that fifo's to Si Chompoo. He's a Rigger, scaffolder.
