My husband and I have just spent the last 19 days at 'The Irish Clock'. We found absolutely nothing to complain about (not that we were looking for anything, I hasten to add!)
It was a very enjoyable and comfortable break and we will have no hestitation in staying there again on our next visit to Udon.
Steve and Mali-great hosts, and staff very pleasant too. A photo I took of them before we left:

Thanks for having us. :D

P.S. We were fasinated with the demolishing work going on next door and noted the progress each day, those boys certainly work hard for a living! =D>

Will do Aardvark. I can't stand passive smoke even when it's my own

Have received an email back so it is the Irish Clock in May for me. :D

Happy Days.

My brother and sister in law stayed in the Irish Clock a year or so ago when they visited us.

It is a decent place in itself, but unfortunately, and to my embarresment, is situated in down a dirty street in a farang morgering soi in Udon. Which is a shame, they have obviously spent a lot of money to make it a decent place, but the clientele sometimes inside and as soon as you step into the street.......

A year ago in the street that the Clock is situated in there were 3 bars just down from it & that was it. Apart from the Top Mansion that is.
I agree that it is a little more busy now but to call it a Falang mongering soi is stretching the imagination more than a little for certain.
The street itself is no more 'dirty' than most in Udon & at least the construction of bars & the new top mansion is cleaning it up, but I guess that will cause you more issues on the Falang Mongering front.
I really do wonder about the attitude of some people who are in Udon :(

Mmmm well did'nt you know where the Irish Clock was situated when they/you booked it.

BH is quite right over a year or so ago only a couple or 3 small, not in your face bars down that soi...not what you or anyone could describe 'as a farang mongering soi', you could blink and probably miss them.
Hope you never took your brother and sister in law to pattaya or phuket, you might possibly die of embarassment or start hyper ventalating by the sight of so many farang orientated entertainment places.

Maybe you are not quite so 'Happy-in-thai'. :( chin up. :D

went there a few days ago with my parents, its fantastic
i had the mixed grill and mum and dad ribeye steaks, cooked to perfection, the mashed potatoes, the best in thailand i had,the gravy was a bit stringy from the thickening, but tasted delicious

all was washed down with a few kilkenny, drambuie, jameson and oh i cant remember

was a great night, the only thing we couldnt reach our taxi driver,so the owner offered to take us home, thanks, great service, but i dont think after we already spend 4500 baht at his place he needed to charge300baht for a drive a normal taxi charges 200baht maximum

Stayed there for a week in October. Didn't get to meet Steve as he was back in England but Mali and staff were great fun and i really look forward to visiting them again sometime. Rooms were great, beer was cold, food was delicious and don't believe i could of wished for anything more.
I walked up along that soi several times a day and night and certainly didn't see anything that remotely suggested a farang mongering area.
Sure, there was the odd discreet bar, but to suggest it remotely resembled a pick up strip really is exagerating.
As for the clientele inside, everyone i met except one person were either the family type or just single blokes quenching their thirst. (gday to Irish Kenny and your girl if you are reading this)
As for that one other person, well, there is always that one ar$ehole who just shouldn't be allowed to enter a foriegn country, they give all farangs a bad reputation.

A year ago definately not, and I'm sure George from the Fiddler's Green would have something to say about that. But now...

...it's looking better all the time (lol)

I was there for two weeks in December 2007 -January 2008. Loved every minute of it.

Steve and staff make one feel like family. Great fun and great hospitality. I will be back there for another go come December 2008.

I will be there with bells on!

I am a non-smoker as well, but I never complained about the smoke there. Always loved the hospitality and the service.

It will be one of the first places I go during my first days in Udon in June!
