Poster Imposter

Postby Laan Yaa Mo » September 15, 2007, 4:14 am

I mentioned a problem experienced by me on the thread, 'Eagle Bar'. For whatever reason, someone was able to use my log-in name and post two replies attacking 'Oldfield'.

I only discovered the thread because there was a notification in my e-mail box that there had been a reply to something I had written in the 'Eagle Bar' thread.

The date of these two replies was 8 Sept. 2007 just after 10 a.m. At that time I was with friends from Udon Thani leaving the Ratchada Hotel in Bangkok for a day of shopping, shopping, shopping at various places in the capital. Later, that night I left Thailand, with great regret, to return for another 11 and a half months of misery in Toronto.

I am mystified as to how someone could have taken possession of my user name and posted two replies in the thread.

Does anyone know how this might have happened?

The larger question of why someone would do this, I guess, has to be left unanswered. [-X There are two people familiar with my friends in Udon Thani who might have been capable of doing something like this owing to their expertise with computers, but I do not want to put names of the forum since there is not enough proof to connect them with this deed.

Anyway, I trust it will not occur again.

Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. I did not make those posts.

In Udon Thani, I was using an internet cafe beside Mr. Tong's that is open from 10 in the morning until midnight. This one charged 20 baht an hour. In addition, I sometimes went to an internet cafe about half a block from the Karin Hotel, where a few buses are parked. They charge 15 baht an hour. I had left Udon for Chiang Mai on 4 September. I did not use an internet cafe in Chiang Mai.

In Bangkok, I did use an internet cafe on a few occasions that was not far from the Chinese-run Rachada City Hotel (900 baht a night for farangs; 800 for Thais and other Asians).

In Canada, I have been using computers at a high school and a university where I work.

It is really strange. My very close and dear friend said that a farang computer expert in Udon had cleaned up a virus in her computer a few days before we left for Chiang Mai, and was teaching her son how to use the 'Notebook' that I bought for him.

Thanks. I will try to get the password changed immediately.

It was bad enough that day having to return to Canada, search for a chihuahua puppy to have shipped to Udon Thani, and now this!

Thanks for the advice from both of you. I got the new password for here, which is different from my e-mail address password, and I will get the new e-mail password too. Previously, my e-mail password was the same as my password for almost everything else including the forum password. Life is grand...sometimes! :D

Sure sounds like you must have inadvertently remained logged in before leaving one of those internet cafes and someone who is a bit familiar with this forum sat down at the same computer and then decided to have a little "fun" at your expense. You got the right advice to change your password anyway.

Guess Oldfield can stop looking all over town for you now. :-$

When using Internet Explorer. After I log out of this forum and go to an other website, and later I use the Internet Explorer back button to look at internet pages I have been before, the Udonmap forum page appears again and I am automatically logged in again.

To be sure, when I am finished using a computer in an internet cafe, I always clear all history and cookies from Internet Explorer on that computer.

You also need to go to tools, internet options, content, autocomplete, untick the boxes and click clear forms and clear passwords.

As a matter of fact, I did use the pc at the Udon Thani airport around 1 September, but I think I logged out before the ten minutes or whatever it was expired.

However, in Chiang Mai, my friend and I both tried using the pc's at that airport. Neither of us could log on nor could anyone else that followed us even though we warned them that the machine was eating baht without providing any service.
