Posting on Udon Thani General Topics Forum

Postby westerby » April 21, 2009, 5:03 pm

I note that quite a few new boys post in the Udonthani General Topics area by mistake. I believe they're misled by the sub heading underneath entitled 'Can't find a suitable category? Then post your topics here!' So they probably see it as an open forum area like the one below.

Maybe we could change that sub heading to read, 'Udonthani general topics only' so the new guys don't repeat the same mistake? Might also make the Mods' life easier as well.

Chawk dee.

I'd certainly agree with that suggestion. =D> =D> :D :D

Currently many members seem to default to posting new topics under the "Udon Thani General Topics" Forum, regardless of the subject material, which does make extra and unnecessary work for the Mods!

Thanks for highlighting it Westers. I'll raise it with Lee. :D

It states Udon Thani General Topics Only...not sure how you could get confused with that.

For a guy with some 12000 posts on this forum you don't take much notice what is in front of you! [-(

You really begin to appreciate the sensitivity of this issue when trying to delve through the
archives to find something, but because perhaps it has not been correctly categorized, it's
almost impossible? Once it drops off the main page forget it? Currently trying to find ATM topic? :-k

Indeed that is one of the reasons why we ask for topic titles to be suitably descriptive, and why we try and keep threads on the original topic, as well as in the correct forum.

If later one wants to do a "search" to find some particular topic or material, it becomes very difficult to find, when threads rambles all over the place.

There has been some material about ATM withdrawal fees, posted on the "Baht what's up with that" thread, today.

And some more material here:

Yes, but you've got Google at the top of the page to search, I use it all the time rather than trawling through the archives - it's quicker.

I tried googling "atm fees" and did not reach the thread I was after so I'm uncertain how effective
that tool is? I did eventually find it right where it was supposed to be "money-finance-investing"
but it was the topic title "another kick in the farang wallet" that caused me to pass by it,perhaps
not as helpfully descriptive as possible. Yes, i'm as guilty as the next fella in deviating from topic
with juvenile comments and it indeed does "degrade" quality of the body of work. it's just a sickness.

The Google search tool at the top looks for search keywords withing the topic title only, therefore if the title is lacking in description it will not be found. It would therefore help if we all used more descriptive topic titles when posting on the forum. :D

The built in forum search function allows you to search the topic content too. search.php

Not 'more descriptive' titles but 'more accurate and concise' titles, so allowing people like Cali (and me) find what he's looking for. We're going back to the reasons for having a Forum, in other words, knowledge base versus chatty old Dears' knitting circle, the titles reflect that as well as the OPs and replies. I would ask why the Moderators don't amend the titles more often, but I already know the answer to that.

Not a criticism, readers, just an observation...'can ee la saan'.

Westers - agree on the first part. The answer to your second point (highlighted) is in Lee's post also quoted above, i.e.

We (the Mods) do sometimes amend topic titles. However, the responsibility and onus should rightly lie with the OP's to provide clear and concise topic titles. After all it is their topic/thought/idea that they wish to represent. They should be best placed to give it an appropriate title, [which incidentally shouldn't be a riddle]. It shouldn't be up to the moderators to second guess or interpret members intentions. There would also then be a danger of us misunderstanding what was intended by the OP and maybe misrepresenting it.

You'll be asking us to correct your grammar and spelling next!!  ](*,) ](*,)

We do amend the titles the best we can, however it would make our job a whole lot easier if the poster choose a more concise title the first place, this is after all part of the forum rules which members agree to when signing up. :D

. After all it is their topic/thought/idea

Thats where a few(posters) post 'exactly' whats in their head...which don't make a great title for the rest of us.
