Potential of Torrential Rain

Postby parrot » July 28, 2011, 5:55 pm

http://www.tmd.go.th/en/thailand.php

Being rainy season, everyone expects a good rain from day to day....but the tropical storm that is crossing Vietnam and heading toward Thailand gives us the chance for 'torrential' rain.
Included in the forecast:
"The strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Torrential rain is likely in the windward side with isolated rain. Tropical storm “Nock ten” over the South China Sea is expected to make landfall over upper Vietnam by 30 July heading the upper northeast of Thailand. During 29 July to 3 August, the active southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Southern Thailand and the Gulf. More torrential rain is likely much of especially the upper Northeast with heavy to very heavy rain. Strong wind-wave in the Andaman Sea and the eastern portion of the upper Gulf is expected. "

Potential of Torrential Rain

Postby Peterplay » July 28, 2011, 6:11 pm

I have seen a number of tropical storms from Vietnam in the last 12 years and many warnings, but apart from 2001 the warnings never really materialised. Or is Kumpawapi too southerly ?

I know Loei can be bad, but here we never had real very heavy rain for sustained periods, again not after 2001.

Potential of Torrential Rain

This weather map shows the projected path of Nok-Ten going well north of Thailand... hope so. Would jeopardize my golf plans for the first of next week.

Potential of Torrential Rain

Postby douglas » July 29, 2011, 1:58 pm

Hi,
Don't know what you call torrential rain. About three years ago, before they put in the new drains, for three days i could not take the kids into school, in Udon. When the water started to come in the doors, of the car, i chickened out and turned back. Also about the same year, was driving down to Korat, about 30K south of Udon the rain was so bad you could not drive. Could not see beyond the front of the car. Pulled of the road and had to wait for a hour for it to ease a bit. South of K.K. the A2 (main road) was closed because of flooding, for 7 k, And the road was at least ten feet above the fields on the side of the road. You could see the tops of houses and trees. Felt sorry for the people that lived there.
I have worked overseas most of my life and this was the worst downpour i have seen. Enen gone through a cyclone, The winds were higher, Our anometer at the airport broke after a gust reached 170mph. But the rain was not as bad as i have seen in LOS.

One of these days they will be correct, and those odds are increasing. By my widget it looks like it will go north/east of us in Udon, per USA weather channel.

it did balloon out, but the heavy part still seems to be a little south of Hanoi and from what I see, will miss Udon.

Potential of Torrential Rain

Postby Bandung_Dero » July 30, 2011, 10:14 am

Nothing yesterday, 10.0 mm overnight and a light shower this morning with the skies currently clearing. Might be a "potential for torrential rain" (always is) but not showing any signs here in Ban Dung!
