Premier League 2010/11

Postby stattointhailand » June 20, 2010, 4:58 pm

GREAT ......... just what the Toon needed. Man Utd at Old Trafford on the opening day (AGAIN) and then Villa at home.

Could be the middle of Sept before we manage to register a point !!

Probably best to get Man U on the first day they might be abit rusty from the lay off !! and could be worse u could be away at Scunthorpe Utd do you remember what happened there last season ? if not 2-1 to Scunny .
I hope Scunny will be joining the toon in the premier league this time next year , not betting on it tho .

Remember two years ago when you got Man United away on the first day of the season ?
You got a well deserved 1-1 draw......and then were relegated.....still,they say lightning doesnt strike twice! :-k

Yeah, I remember it well ........... not sure about the "well deserved" bit though.
Difference this time is that they will be smarting from NOT being reigning champions, and are sure to want a good start to the new season.

I think congratulations are in order for WBA. Of the last 5 teams to visit Stamford Bridge their 6-0 defeat was the second best performance of the visiting teams. :D

Forgive me Galee, because I know you go back a long way with Chelsea, when things were not so rosy.

But if this is the start of another season of annihilations by the big boys game after game, then personally I find that tedious. Give me a real contest. But I'm afraid the gap between top and bottom is that large, that cricket scores will be common, with just the occasional stumble.
But I owe Chelsea a thank you. They apparently let struggling Palace keep ALL the gate receipts from the pre-season friendly. So, thanks the Russian geezer. Hope you won't be short.

Well the new season start did not really have many major surprises. Some of the scores were a little on the high side :D but the only two matches that would give much of a clue to the end of season top of the table both ended in draws.
I gather Spurs v City was a bit of a damp squib - but that was also down to City. I didn't see the match, but all the reports I read said that City looked like a team of 11 individuals & much work needed to be done. They had a pretty poor record away last season. from memory, so i guess maybe they want to stop dropping all 3 points away this. really need to be pushing the likes of Spurs (for all that Harry has done to them) if you are Premiership condenders though!!
I guess Pool might have been happy with a point against Arsenal BEFORE the game. As the game went on I think they will be dissapointed at not getting all 3. Cole was trying to hard (& a bit out of his depth) before being sent off & for Pool to go down to 10 & then score must have delighted the Manager. The equaliser would have given him nightmares that it will be a repeat of last year though!!

I don't know if it was me looking forward to the beginning of the EPL, but I thought the first half of the Spurs game was excellent. IMO more exciting than anything I watched in the World Cup. Second half was, not surprisingly, a little bit more low key, but still entertaining. It was also nice to get back to listening to good old singing and chanting from the supporters.

Bob,
Dont forget Manchester Uniteds good start to the season,so far.A comfortable 3-0 win over the Toon with Scholes man of the match and an excellent performance by Berbatov.....did I really say that ?
This following on from their 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the Charity Shield.
Rooney still struggling but Hernandez settling in well and maybe Berbatov coming good at last. This new striker from Portugal,Bebe, certainly one to watch out for in the future.....recommended by Queiroz.
Maybe get a truer picture this weekend....Fulham away....lost there in the Premiership the last two seasons [-o<

Chelsea won 6-0 again this time away to Wigan.I give their manager Martinez two weeks at most. They lost to Blackpool 4-0 at home last week and next weekend face Spurs away who beat them 9-1 in the corresponding fixture last season.
Blackpool back down to earth with a 6-0 hammering at Arsenal.
Liverpool play Manchester City 01.45 over here Tuesday morning.Anyone know a place still open where it is likely to be on ?
I dont think it will be on Thai TV.
Thanks.

Think you will be lucky to see that in a bar Tony.
There is a Thai restaurant across the road from AEK (Sorry do not know the name) that opens 4pm to 4am that nearly always shows any Premier League that is on...

Disappointing for Man U yesterday. Certainly 2 dropped points the way Chelsea are trying to set some sort of record. 200 goals in a season actually looks a possibility after 12 - 0 in two!! Only looks like the top spot is going 1 way this season.
Newcastle fans must be happy. A great result to a bit of a rudderless Villa side - but you can only beat the team that turns up.
The 'W''s are starting to look in danger already (in the shape of Wigan & West Ham - although West Brom have eased away - FOR NOW!!). Everton are doing their usual early season 'we are strangers' act. I cannot understand how they can beat anybody towards season end & then start the new season so poorly. This must be the third season on the trop when it has happened & must be mystifying to the Manager & the Fans.
Will be interesting to see the game tonight. Liverpool having two difficult opening encounters. The initial draw against Arsenal looks a little better in light of Saturday's result. I think Arsenal will be the same again this year - let them get on top & they will crush teams but a different story if they are put on the back foot.
Citi were rather less than average in their first game. Will need to do much better to make waves this year, but maybe they wwill be happy with 2 points after 2 difficult games to start!!

What's the betting that Nani got the "hair dryer" treatment at full blast when he got back to the changing room yesterday. That will be the first, last and only penalty Nani takes at Utd. Giggs was odds on to score if he took the penalty.
Early days for Chelsea. At times they have looked all over place. Lucky that they have played two poor teams.
Interesting match tonight. A draw would suit me.

I did not watch it, but the 3-0 result surprised me a bit this morning. Citi had a pretty good home record last season but i expected a little more defensively from Pool than the scoreline suggest.

Poor to miss a penalty I agree Galee. Nani sometimes looks like he might be the real deal but he is still very inconsistant & is starting to get past having the 'he is only a kid' excuse. Poor season for United I feel. The old timers in the team (& Rooney on fire) got them farther than than deserved last season. The old timers are a year older this & Mr. Rooney seems to have had other things than football on his mind for the last 6 months now!!

For a slightly different slant, the report from Bloomberg on City v Liverpool

Manchester City Shows Sheikh Mansour Value of Soccer Investment

By Tariq Panja - Aug 24, 2010 1:15 AM GMT+0100

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan watched his team play at home for the first time since spending more than 350 million pounds ($542 million) on new talent and was shown his investment may be paying off.

City, starting with 10 players acquired since Sheikh Mansour’s 2008 takeover, beat Liverpool 3-0 last night for its biggest win over the 18-time English soccer champion in 73 years. The victory lifted City into fourth place in the Premier League.

Argentine forward Carlos Tevez, signed for 25 million pounds last season, scored twice in the second half after Gareth Barry had opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a goal that brought the City owner out of his seat in celebration.......

Perhaps the Premier League might be more appropriately situated in the Finance section :-k
