Rail link from Airport to Pratunam

Postby trekkertony » August 9, 2010, 7:20 am

I don't know if this has been covered but l experienced the new rail service between Pratunam and the airport ( 4 stops in between)in recent days and it is going to benefit those who are caught on an extended flight connection who can now duck into the city area or any other area which runs off this link. It officially opens on 23.08.10. Baggage storage at the airport is 100Baht for the day. A nice adjunct to visiting Bangkok without having to fight the gridlock

Thanks for posting that Trekkertony.

Maybe that will also introduce another related question, which hotels are close to stations on the rail link, or close to stations on the rail link, which also have some nightlife.

rode the train out to the airport and back today for fun.. We took the "slow" train which stops at each station.. End to end from Phayathai BTS station to the Airport station was 30 minutes. the train leaves from either end every 15 minutes. Special Promotion cost till Jan 1st "15 Baht" one way. The Airport end station is underneath the area where the public taxis pick folks up.. You just walk to the end of the ground floor and you'll see the signs and elevator going down to the train station. There's also a Subway restaurant and a coffee shop adjacent to the station. I tried to talk the wife into taking the "Express" whici is one way "promotion" price of 100 Baht but she wouldn't go for it, so we didn't go to Makkasan..

It was clean, fast and the only complaint I have is the bloody tours make a huge "bang!!" when they close..

It's neatly connected to the BTS at Phayathai station so getting from the airport to Phayathai and then down to Sukhumvit would probably take less than an hour and cost 15 Baht (till Dec 31st) for the train and about 30 Baht for BTS skytrain.

I still cant see people with a 20 kg luggage and a hand carry wishing to jump on the BTS to then reach the interchange and then check in etc and take the ride.

Backpackers will, coz its cheaper than a taxi, but .....

I want to read a report of someone who has used it from Sukhumvitt eg , and used the check in facilities at the BTS station and then arrived at the airport for the flight and had their luggae arriove at their final port of call.

Taxi from Lumpini to Makkasan, was dropped - with luggage - almost in the train. Very easy, quiet, fast and tidy.

Took the express train from Makkasan to airport with luggage. Didn't check in the luggage at Makkasan, that service not yet available.

Normally I pay around 400 baht incl highway tolls, now I alltogether only paid 200 baht.

But for 200 baht I may decide later that I am too lazy to change at Makkasan and drive straight to the ap.

Anyway, nice service and efficient as well.

the mans main complaint was luggage carts could not be taken onto the platform at the airport, luggage can only be stowed on the first and last carriage, at makkasan there were no luggage carts and only escalators and outside there were no taxis. here the man seems a fool as he has arrived rush hour and with a heavy suitcase he then travels useing the mrt and the bts which of course were packed.

Dont see him as a fool at all to be honest, a victim of a poorly planned and hugely expensive white elephant as far as airport commuters are concerned.. For the normal commuter living out there etc, fantastic.

What committee would have thought that people travelling to and from the airport might need some form of luggage assistance at both ends.
